iPhone 3G stars in parody

The sad thing? The video might be a parody of iOS4 on the iPhone 3G, but it's definitely the truth on my end as well. Still tethered to an iPhone 3G at the moment, utilizing basic services such Maps requires a good minute of finger tapping and waiting for the OS to decide if it wants to launch the app or not.

Video creator adamburtle lamented on the same thing. He writes, "... it's not because my needs have grown. It's not because I've installed a bunch of laggy software. It's because Apple's firmware has become bloated, with respect to the processing power of the 3G iPhone."

Adam, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Of course, there's the easy answer -- upgrade to an iPhone 4. Then again, it may not be worth it. Let's see what Steve has to say on that tomorrow first. Otherwise, it might be worth just getting a cheap 3GS.

Wow, I was linked to this but honestly - can hardly believe that it's really that bad for some customers? I have a 3G and upgraded to iOS4 and I don't have anywhere near these slowdowns.

Yes Apple should do something.

These are both meant to be effective too:
1. Hard reset - hold top and home buttons and keep holding after the red slider appears and disappears, only let go when the apply symbol appears.

2. A phone backup/restore cycle. I am doing this now to see if it makes things even faster.

I have

My performance is even worse than in the video. Many apps crash before they fully load. Even the iPod won't load until after 5 or 6 attempts.

I occassionally get the same experience on my iPhone 3G without having upgraded to iOS4. I reboot, yes I said it, and the problems clear up for awhile.

Apple should have not released iOS4 for the 3G iPhone or 2G iPod touch. Of course the forums and comments would be full of people pissing and moaning that they cant get iOS4. As they say you cant please everyone.

In actual real usage its barely any slower than the 3G was already since 3. If you use a 3G then use a 3GS or iPhone 4 briefly and return to your 3G you will be crying as the performance difference is staggering.

This helped with some things (especially scrolling through lists and SMS launching).

@Megan Lavey: "Otherwise, it might be worth just getting a cheap 3GS."

The $99 one from AT&T? 16GB/32GB are rising in value everyday the problem with iPhone4 continues. I can recover something like 75% or more of the original cost of my year-old, factory-unlocked 3GS/32GB, which can also be rolled back to 3.0 to 3.1.3 (if you know how!)

In fact, I'm tempted to get the white iPhone4 (factory-unlocked) as soon as it's introduced in the UK.

I've just upgraded my 3G today - to 3.1.3 (from 3.0.1). I won't be joining the iOS4 crew until I get some feedback that it's a bit more tailored to the hardware of the 3G.

It'd be nice to have folders, but I can do without. For the rest I'd only be upgrading to get iAds served, so no loss there either.

Folders! I upgraded last week to iOS4 and only just remembered I could do Folders. Guess it's not that big a draw in the end.
