Apple offers free case as iPhone 4 fix
Steve Jobs just announced today that the company will issue a free case to every iPhone 4 purchased through September 30. If you've already purchased a bumper case for your iPhone 4, you are entitled to a refund. You can apply for the free case through Apple's web site starting late next week. The company plans to source cases from third parties due to a shortage in bumper cases, so iPhone 4 customers will have a choice of a few different cases. If you are still not satisfied with the iPhone, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of your purchase. Steve Jobs said plainly about the decision that "we want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund."
The move comes three weeks and a day after the first customers began taking their new iPhones home and experiencing both antenna and proximity sensor issues. The growing backlash against Apple escalated earlier this week after Consumer Reports said they would not recommend the device, even though it comes in at the top of their smartphone ratings. This was followed by rumors of a possible recall, posts being pulled down from the Apple forums and finally today's conference.
Edit (2:25 p.m. ET): Jobs acknowledged that the case offer will be international.

You guys may wanna help me understand one thing... and excuse me if this has already been pointed out...
Steve argued that the 3GS (and other phones too) does suffer from the very same problem as the 4 and the reason why the 4 drops around 1% more calls than the 3GS may be because way less people bought a case together with the 4. He is right that... Mehr anzeigen when people ar able to touch the 4's weak spot, calls are more prone to drops. But this is a totally different kind of weak spot compared to other phones. I am pretty sure that when you put a case around the 3GS, you will attenuate the signal even more as it now has to go through hand+case, whereas when talking about the 4 it helps big time.
So he is talking about general attenuation caused by the hand shielding radio waves and now putting another object around the 4 should solve the problem? It indeed helps the 4, but only because touching its weak spot is a different kind of attenuation, not being present in other phones, provoked by bridging the WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS and GSM/UMTS antennae, either shorting them or changing the wavelength.
So there is the general attenuation caused by the way one holds the phone shielding radio waves with the bare hand which is true for all phones. But Apple is introducing another kind of attenuation in my opinion which really brings the signal down, even more than with other phones.
Nobody talked about that and I am disappointed that no question was raised pulling the discussion in this direction.
Hey Jordan, I gave you a +, you're right, and it's sad that everyone is hating on you because you're Jordan.
Keep on Trolling brother.
I know, but its kinda ironic after how Apple use this tactic to manipulate the media into creating a buzz about something that doesn't change anything (generally speaking, although when it does you're already expecting it), Steve got so upset about the way the media blew the antenna problem 'out of all proportion', and manipulated him into having a press conference to address the issue

Years from now when Apple is able to beam the knowledge of a new product release directly into your head, they will still be beaming in a "store is down" message two hours beforehand.
Did anyone notice how Apple manage to update the website to take bumpers off sale and add a note about you'll be able to order one for free next week. No 'The Apple Store is down' bite-your-fingernails-down-to-the-quick-to-find-out-nothing's-changed message.
If only they would start doing updates this way all the time.....
Why is it funny? This by no means makes the Consumer Reports test invalid, simply because Apple did their own testing. The entire point of independent testing is that it is free from the bias of the manufacturer, who is of course going to spin any results in a positive way. I.E. "other phones do this too, so let's not worry about it."
Armchair experts makes sense in this context - normal people who can reproduce the problem are precisely who matter most. Regardless of what the engineers at Apple say, if I can hold the phone in my left hand comfortably and lose bars, it's an issue.
My issue is this, I don't like the stupid bumper. The phone wont fit in a belt case with a bumper on. This is not even close to a solution. The phone doesn't work properly as designed and I see this as an insult to those who have supported Apple products over the years. I love my iphone but may return it anyway sadly.

However, I saw the press conference on CNN.com and it seems like the engineers are still working on a fix. That's why the case is only until Sept. 30th, and he made repeated references to the fact that they were still working on the problem.

I wouldn't worry about the Droid X - advertising that you can hold it any way you like is a bit like showing a red rag to a bull.
It's like Oracle advertising their database as "unbreakable" - it's just throwing out a challenge.
Motorola had better be prepared for a bunch of people who are actually going to really test their claim to the max.
I can't wait for the first YouTube videos to appear when people have worked out how hold the Droid X just the right way to make the bars drop alarmingly.
I have bought tens of thousands of dollars of Apple products over the years. Needless to say, I'm a huge Mac fan and I'm a huge Steve Jobs fan.
However, Jobs' arrogance is showing big-time on this issue. Big-time. All of the emails where he has patronized people, and now this conference where he makes excuses. Totally uncool.
You know, it's not just phone reception either. It is bluetooth reception too. My Jawbone doesn't work worth a hoot with this phone compared to my 3G.
I just got off the phone with Apple online. My RMA shipping labels are being emailed to me.
By the way, my signal issue happens even with a case on it!
Oh, and I tried that bumper case and thought it was garbage. It is loose on the phone and doesn't extend far enough out beyond the edge to protect against a drop.
I will wait till they make a decent phone and I will buy THAT version. Fortunately I kept the 3G.
@Joe I'm sorry you are having so much trouble with the iPhone 4, sounds like returning it is the best thing for you.
After the antenna and the proximity sensor, the bluetooth issues are the next in line and I am actually surprised that no one mentioned them in the Q&A. Especially since (to add insult to injury) if you use a Jawbone then you have no reason to hold your iPhone in a death grip at all, so reception should be perfect.
If it is any consolation, then one thing I am personally convinced of is that the next iPhone will have the best antenna ever built into a handheld device, and then some. Steve Jobs isn't going to let this go, he will make the antenna engineers sit down and invent something utterly amazing that no one has ever heard of. Such as when you hold the iPhone 5 in a certain way, instead of plummeting from 5 down to 1, your bars will immediately shoot up to 10.
Remember, how a couple of years ago Apple was getting a lot of stick from Greenpeace and others about the environmental friendliness of their consumer products (even though they were by no means the worst offenders)? Well ever since then, every product Apple releases, Steve gets out the check list and goes through it one by one: BFR free, PVC free, etc.
Jobs is like an elephant - he never forgets - and he'll keep pushing and pushing until he makes each and every Apple product the best on the planet.
Unfortunately, for people who have real trouble with the antenna issue and don't like the aesthetics of a free bumper, it looks highly likely this issue is going to stay for the lifetime of the iPhone 4 - although I wouldn't put it past Apple to do quite a lot of tuning in the next few months to minimise the impact (look for more on this at the Apple iPod event in September).
But, the good news for you, @Joe, is I am sure that they will completely fix the bluetooth issues in the next few weeks as this doesn't look so much like a hardware issue.
Hey TUAW, maybe Erica should write an app to look at bluetooth reception and then maybe you will get over the endless antenna posts?
Remember when everybody said that the bumper was a ripoff for $29. Now nobody wants a third-party case that actually looks cool, like the exolife. See, on my iOS4 device it changes exolife to explode.
