Chuck Schumer writes open letter to Steve Jobs

Just in case you missed it yesterday, US Senator Chuck Schumer wrote an open letter to Steve Jobs asking him to deal with the ongoing iPhone 4 reception issues. "To address this concern," Schumer wrote, "I ask that Apple provide iPhone 4 customers with a clearly written explanation of the cause of the reception problem and make a public commitment to remedy it free-of-charge." Schumer cites the Consumer Reports posts about reception issues, and suggests that Apple both provide free software updates to make sure bars correctly reflect signal reception (which it did yesterday), and provide the actual formula it uses for bar strength (which it probably won't do).

Politics aside (and please don't argue politics on our Apple blog, thank you -- if the comments get out of hand on this one, we'll just close them), I can't see how this is much more than Schumer jumping in on a cause that's already rolling along fine without him. Even before his letter went out, today's press conference had been scheduled, and the issues were well documented. I guess we appreciate the sentiment and all (we do want these issues fixed), but Jobs was probably going to do today whatever he was going to do without hearing from a New York Senator.

Thanks anyway, Chuck. Probably time to leave the iPhone 4 issues to Apple and its customers, and get on back to, you know, governing the country.

OK folks I'm not sure why Schumer decided to write a letter now his timing was a bit poor as mentioned before but being a congressman does not disqualify him from having an opinion about the iPhone. Chances are he has one or two and perhaps he's experienced problems with his phone and needed to vent. Saying that the iPhone not working is none of his business because he's a government official is failing to recognize that the iPhone is being used in government for various applications other than for personal phone calls. So if there are any problems with it, esp. dropping network connections this is an issue. I like he fact that Apple is the kind of company that consumers politicians included can write letters to, lodge their complaints and they actually do something about it. Some other companies would not give a care. So be it a politician or a regular Joe or Jane the bottom line is that Apple is on the job. Although it took em a few weeks.

Little Chuckie starts to feel neglected if he isn't getting his 15 minutes of national face-time every once in a while. How you guys in Jersey keep electing this.....(mumble-mumble).....I'll never know.

Oh, yes.....F**k Bloomberg, Consumer Reports, and Little Chuckie!

I'd just like to point out that if Senator Schumer was trying for a little facetime (yes, I caught the pun), then the mere fact we're talking about it here shows he succeeded.

Gotcha.

first you say "no politics" then dis Schumer. perhaps you prefer republican senators, like AT&T does?

maybe Schumer, like the rest of us, would like his phone to work. my 3Gs has been glitch city since the software "upgrade", and it would certainly be great if aside from the exceptional data capabilities i could make a PHONE call, on a network other than AT&T. I'll wait for the iPhone 4 to be fully functional before switching, and appreciate Schumer's attention to a matter that is frustrating for a lot of NY'ers.

Great way to jump on the band wagon. Way too many politicians worrying about the little things instead of the real issues.
