Camera phone inventor makes a FaceTime call from racing yacht

In a fitting tribute to a technology that he had a hand in creating, entrepreneur and sailing yacht racer Philippe Kahn recently used a satellite hookup and his iPhone 4 to make a FaceTime call to his office from dead-center between Santa Cruz, California and Honolulu, Hawaii.

While the video isn't as smooth as what we're used to via land-based Wi-Fi and broadband networks, it's pretty incredible to see Philippe talking to a co-worker from the deck of the racing sailboat Pegasus in the Pacific Ocean.

Kahn is a pretty bright guy. He was one of the founders and former CEO of Borland, an early programming tool development company, is credited with the invention of the mobile camera phone in 1997, and is now the CEO of FullPower Technologies, the company behind the MotionX GPS apps for iPhone and iPad.

Kahn's invention of the mobile camera phone was triggered by the birth of his daughter Sophie in 1997; he mentions during the video that he called his "camera phone baby" at home using the same setup.

Thanks to Richard for the tip!

Microsoft, Oracle and IBM with their heavy-handed marketing practices were responsible for the virtual death of Borland, one of the finest software tools vendors that existed in years gone by.

This guy and his partners were geniuses, still are, what with development tools, camera phones and GPS apps. Long may they continue to innovate and survive against the odds and the big guys.

No, Jordan, they're not criticising you because they're "fanboys", they're not automatically defending Apple, and they're not under the influence of any Aid, Kool or otherwise.

They're criticising you because you made a stupid and unnecessary comment (again).

Your continued belief that you are only ever criticised by blind loyalists and that the criticism is never justified, is what is causing you to continue to make stupid comments.

Pull your finger out, and accept that much of the criticism levelled at you is justified, and comes not from a rabidly pro-Apple, anti-Jordan cabal, but from level-headed and rational people who are sick and tired of you abusing this site's comment section for your lame and repetitive pot-shots at Apple, Inc.

Your original question now looks rather foolish, doesn't it?

Your only problem seems to be that there's an Apple-themed post on an Apple blog.

Your exposing your empty, vacuous life for all to see. It's pitiful. Find some better way to spend your time.

I impressed with this video I am. Every other person even on modern airplane has challenge doing this. In racing sailboat, not even toilet and no comfort, even more difficult. Boat is 50 feet long. My impressed. In Korea we do research in camera-phone and we find no pictures from anyone else claiming with patents creation. What is meaning is that if one of the people making claim that they created camera phones really did, there would be a picture that they took. Kahn baby picture Sophie is only one. In dates clearly 1997, two years before J-phone Japan that launched with contract with Kahn. Research done. Other claim not credible, it isn't. Comment not fair.

When I first came across this article it took me back. I made more than a few runs between San Fran and Pearl on both aircraft carriers and salvage ships.

When something happened on a 30 day crossing between Pearl and Yokosuka Japan, you had to leave it to the wife's wisdom and a little help from the Chaplin and the Navy Wives Club to see them through, and you had to wait it out unknowing until arriveing in port.

I've done a little research and found that most ships have low bandwidth Internet for the crew but iChat is not possible. There is a project to bring high speed to ships, just as they have had for the troops in Iraq.

For those sailors out there far from home, wouldnt it be nice to go to the ships library, check out the iPhone 4 and see how the wife is doing with that flooded basement and the kids chickenpox. An email is one thing but that would be a quality of life change.

That's cool and all. But I am more impressed at how much he sounds like Norm Macdonald.

From what I've heard about AT&T, doing this from the middle of the ocean is easier that doing it from the middle of San Francisco.

that was nice and all, but I almost want to call shenanigans -- the dude in the office didn't really talk to the dude in the boat, more like the dude in the boat just yammered away... not a conversation at all. pretty easy to fake it seems to me, and it kind of defeats the purpose. he could have just made a video and posted it somewhere and it would be the same. almost.

not saying this isn't real, just saying they should have done more with the opportunity.

The guy in the boat needs to look at a globe. The point in the worlds oceans that is most remote from land is not between San Francisco and Hawaii. It's in the South Pacific between South America and Australia. It's commonly called Point Nemo (48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W).

THANK you, I was waiting for someone to mention this... For such a self-proclaimed genius, you'd think he would have researched this just a little bit...

i don't proclaim to be a geography guru but i believe he mentioned it was the farthest from land in terms of a direct 1000-mile radius. same distance from all points.
