Crisis expert says Apple gets a C on iPhone 4 PR
Hilarious Taiwanese videos aside, just how did Apple do with last week's touchy press conference? Patrick Kerley, a communications strategist for a firm in Washington, DC, tells Computerworld that Apple actually did very well -- only it might have been too late already. He said that Jobs was very on message at last week's press conference, and that walking on stage and telling everyone that all phones have reception issues was actually a brilliant move. Seth Weintraub of Fortune agrees -- while he doesn't think that Apple and other cellphone makers actually share the same problems, he does say that Jobs' reframing of the reception issue was so effective that other cellphone companies actually sent out their own press releases on Friday, responding to Apple and becoming part of the issue. On the other hand, Kerley says that while the press conference did its job, Apple should have stepped up sooner with a statement about the iPhone 4's reception -- just staying back from the issue allowed others like Consumer Reports to step up and fill the informational void. While there was a risk of responding too soon and making a problem even bigger than it should be, Kerley believes Apple gets a C on the issue overall, and that it should have come out with a "We're working on it" statement way before it did.
Of course, this is all PR analysis about spin -- the best case scenario is that there shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. Hopefully, with the refunds available and the free bumpers shipping, everyone's iPhones will receive and send calls freely, and we can all get back to our favorite pastime: waiting for the next version to be announced.

It may very well be a problem with all phones. But I have never had a problem with a phone just by holding it in a normal fashion. I had a 2g iphone and I never had reception issues. I've had countless nokias, ericsons, and sony walkman phones with no issues at all. The only time I would loose reception would be if I was in a bad area or in a building with a metal roof. Don't get me wrong I love my iphone 4 but they need to be a little more creative with their excuses.

Plus if u look at YouTube the htc, nokia, blackberry, and many others have the same problem, and they don't get free cases so stop the grades n the crying just take ur iPhone back. Is funny how the people that cry the most don't even own an iPhone 4.

It doesn't make a lick of sense, this wasn't a "crisis" issue. And its not a war or anything, this was a corporate issue, only mainly created by the media blowing up a minor thing way out of peroration.

July 19 2010 at 7:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replydon't waste a minute of your life reading anything from Bloomberg or Fortune or any other moronic publications. I trust the antenna engineers-they say all phones lose bars, so that's the end of it.
Lizard face from RIM is blowing smoke and making a fool of himself.
How many companies send out their actual CEOs out front and center to handle this stuff?
Jobs even said himself; they could have hid behind a wall of PR people, but they didn't. With Jobs at the helm, apple doesn't mince words- Apple was put into a crap situation of having to defend their work as is... they also had to clear up a bunch of rumors and basically tell the press to settle the shuck down at a press conference.
It may have been underwhelming, but the end result is that Apple held their position. They declared that they continue to stand proudly by their work and are going the extra mile just to make sure there's a solution for every single user. In the end, it'll prove to be the right move.
And as far as being earlier... perhaps. The internet moves things along far faster then business can, so maybe an earlier statement like "We're taking complaints very seriously and investigating the issue, but we stand firmly by the design of the iPhone antenna. We'll release our findings asap." Would've just cooled everybody's jets before it got out of hand.
Screw the "crisis experts". This was never a crisis in the first place. The other phone makers are the ones who are lying about their reception. There are countless blogs, and Youtube videos that totally debunk their claims to not have reception issues. They're just pissed that their boring products don't generate the same hype that the iPhone does.
