Skype for iPhone gets iOS4 background multitasking in version 2.1

The free Skype app received a minor update today, but the impact to iOS 4 users is going to be impressive.

According to the release notes, you can now run Skype in the background on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS running iOS4. This means that Skype users can now receive Skype calls and instant messages while other apps are running or the iPhone is locked. As with the iPhone's Phone app, you can continue your call while you switch to another application.

The update is free, and those who are already using the app should see an update appearing in iTunes on their iPhones soon.

Thanks to Michael, Gabriel, and Gary for the tip!

It will work on Jailbroken phones. My Iphone 3GS is currently Jailbroken and running on OS Version 3.1.2 and I have a number of mods that allow me to run skype. If you get the warning notification that Skype is not supported on a modified OS you need to download or reinstall mobile substrate. However this is just part of the process. Now that Skype itself is working, its useless while closed (not running in the background). This is an easy fix. Go to Cydia (Jailbroken devices) search for backgrounder. there is no need for activator although it may be required for backgrounder installation. Once you have backgrounder and all the requirements. You can run skype and enable backgrounding by holding the home button untill a message appears. Now that you have Skype running in the background you will not recieve push notifications because backgrounder make the device think that the application is still open. No worries you will still be notified by sounds or vibrations. Keep in mind that if your phone is going off and you see nothing to open you Skype app that is running in the background. I had this problem but I've gotten used to it so its not that big of a hassle. The only other problem is that if your using Skype on your WiFi connection its useless because the WiFi is gone when your device screen is off (sleep mode). You will again need to open Cydia and search for Insomnia. Upon installation this will keep applications that do not run when your device is in sleep mode running, thus keeping you connected to your WiFi. Any Questions Contact me at the following:

I just came across a weird bug. All of the audio was being sent out the ear piece and not the speaker, and by all audio I mean "all audio". I thought it had something to do with skype running in the background, so I closed the skype app from the multi-tasking menu and what do you know, fixed.

I just wanted to know if anyone else came across this and if not I hope this helped.

We have three people with iPhones in the office:
2 Vanilla, 1 JB.
On 1 of the phones Skype backgrounds itself properly, on the other two it does not.

So while being JB may very well break things due to MobileSubstrate updates as reported above, it does not seem to be the only issue at play.....

If Voip calls are important to you, you should get the Acrobits app, and an SIP ATA for your loved remote one (unless they have an Android or iPhone).

The update number is 2.0.1. Maybe you'd want to change the title. :)

Only the App Store is reporting the version as 2.0.1... The apps own description as well as version info within the app all report 2.1 (as I mentioned previously!).

If you're having problems with Skype on a jailbroken iPhone, you'll need to wait for an update for Mobile Substrate from Saurik and Cydia. Once again, Skype is doing some funky trickery that surprisingly is allowed by Apple, even though most other apps never have problems with Mobile Substrate.

If you want it working today, however, you can uninstall Mobile Substrate from the 'advanced' view under your packages. This will remove any and all processes that rely on Mobile Substrate, including 3G Unrestrictor, Winterboard, and ultrasn0w for you unlockers, so be careful what you're doing.

I'm willing to bet an update will be available soon.

TUAW missed the bigger announcement - Skype has dropped plans to charge for making Skype-to-Skype calls over 3G!! That means they'll be free even after 2010!!! Check it out on their blog:

Its good first step but Skype is still slacking abit. I mean, with the iPhone 4's front facing camera, they have a PERFECT opportunity to do video chat. I mean, Fling did it (depsite the quality wasn't that good) before Skype cut them off.

Also, something Skype themselves don't even mention: The images and icon are now updated for the iPhone 4's retina display.

Multitasking works great, but still no bluetooth, no video calling. Skype is slacking.

Hey, C'mon, people have only been asking for Bluetooth support for, oh, a year or two now. Just because everybody else already did it is no reason for Skype to give a crap.

Their glacial pace of development is downright laughable.
