FacePlant brings quick FaceTime chats and video voice mail to the iPhone 4

By now, everybody who owns an iPhone 4 knows how cool FaceTime is. They're also probably frustrated with the fact that a) you need to make a call at least one time in order to verify that a friend has an iPhone 4 and can actually do FaceTime chats, b) you can't see when friends are on Wi-Fi and ready to talk, and c) you can't leave them a video message when they're off a Wi-Fi network or have their phone turned off.

An upcoming free iPhone app, FacePlant, hopes to change all of that. FacePlant is from the same folks who brought you 12seconds and Rally Up, so they had the necessary savvy to supply both the video messaging piece and the social networking feel that FacePlant provides.

Here's the concept: you sign up for a free FacePlant account, which consists of your name and iPhone 4 number. The app goes through your contacts list, and if there's anyone in that list who is registered with FacePlant, they show up on a list of contacts. If they're ready and willing to talk, their name shows up surrounded by a bright orange bar; if they're offline, their name is outlined in gray. Tapping an active (orange) name displays a dialog that asks if you want to make a FaceTime call, a voice call, or leave a video message.
When you select FaceTime Call, the phone number of the recipient is displayed briefly, along with a dialog that displays Cancel or FaceTime buttons; tapping FaceTime makes the connection. Selecting Video Message brings up the standard iPhone 4 video capture screen, and you can record a short message to send to your FaceTime buddy. Send it, and you can get back to whatever you were doing with the satisfaction of knowing that your message will be delivered.

If your friend or co-worker is off the network, leave 'em some video voice mail. Just tapping the gray bar surrounding their name brings up a dialog that gives you a choice of making a voice call or leaving them a video message. Apple came up with the idea of Visual Voicemail; FacePlant is the first Video Voice Mail that we've seen. FacePlant has one other cool feature: just like with MMS video messages, you can send and receive Video Messages over 3G.

FacePlant should be available in the App Store soon. Stay tuned to TUAW and follow us on Twitter (@TUAW) for that announcement, or click the FacePlant link that appears earlier in this post to sign up for notification of availability.

I don't really see the benefit for myself. I don't make a lot of phone calls because when I ask someone a question they normally need time to find the answer and respond. I don't ask a question like "Hey, what are you looking at?" I'm more likely to ask the question, "Hey, I'm going out to buy a sweater. do you know of any sales right now?"

So, SMS is much better for me but I also like sending voice messages by email (like TrulyMail and Incredimail do). The point is to send a message and not sit on hold while someone is searching for the answer.

Just my $0.02.

I wonder which (big or small) developer will be first to come out with a quality, workable FaceTime conferencing app? Now that would make people "jump back", especially when FaceTime becomes available for the iPad...

Oh, and I mean multi (more than one-on-one) conferencing, by the way...

wow, I feel like a dweeb. It never occurred to me that I could send a video message via sms to my wife's 3GS.

Question: does this app enable non-iPhone4 users to talk to iPhone4 users via FaceTime?

In another word, does it interoperate with FaceTime protocol?

It's actually using FaceTime to make the calls... All this app is doing is serving as a registrar or intermediary where the fact that you have iPhone4 is stored, and your online status can be tracked. It also adds the Video Message function.

That is interesting but I have been using Fring. Not only can I do video chat with iPhone 4 users but 3gs, Android, and any other phone that allows Fring app. I can even do video chat with iPod Touch and 3g phones that don't have video. Of course, they only see me.

"By now, everybody who owns an iPhone 4 knows how cool FaceTime is."

Im sorry but I dont understand what the big deal with facetime is?
Its basically a crippled version of the video call function in the 3GPP standard.

This is not a new feature, I remember 10 years ago my sister got a new NEC phone nasty looking thing. The phone was promoted as a videocall phone by
the provider "3".

Since then every single phone I´ve owned have had that capability, the thing is that It never caught on except for in the deaf community.

The video call function that is supported in almost every phone in europe
is superior in every way, all calls are made over the regular 3G network and theres no need for wifi.

Also its a standard supported by all the phone makers so theres no problem calling a friends Sony Ericsson with your Nokia.

I dont understand why Apple had to try and push this as there own super feature?

The best thing for me as a user would be to implement the 3GPP standard and let me make video calls or "Face Time" if you will to any phone, even my 7 year old Nokia.

Anyone care to enlighten me on how this feature is so great?

Here's a better solution: Call a friend when you want to talk. At some point in the conversation, say something like: "Hey, you got an iPhone 4, right?" When he/she gives you a verbal confirmation, boom, switch to facetime if you both wish. There, done. Easy-peasy.

I'm not too sure why I'd want to talk to someone, even a friend, just because they happen to have an iPhone 4 in range of a wifi network.

When you want to look them in the eye as you ask them something really important, like were they the ones that laced your drink with Rohypnol and tied you to a lamp post in the middle of nowhere after your stag night on the eve of your wedding...

This should be built in functionality in the phone application! iOS5 groundbreaking feature.

I think this would be great BUT I wish someone could add IChat to the mix. Face time and iChat to a laptop would be the nuts.

I like the idea, but unfortunately it still doesn't circumvent the problem that I don't know off the top of my head who on my contacts list has an iPhone 4. Yes I have a pretty good idea about my close friends and family (none of them do), but I haven't even used the feature yet because the only person I can call is the Apple facetime support hotline, and I'm not THAT desperate to use a feature that I won't ever use otherwise. Basically, I don't think I'm ever going to actually use facetime, or at least not for another year or two when those I know with 3GSes decide to upgrade again.

This DOES alleviate that problem... it scans your contacts and whomever registers with an iPhone 4 it will designate them to you.
