iPad plate serves up pure geek deliciousness

Japanese blogger Shiinaneko has found a new use for his iPad -- a substitute for your typical dinner plate.
It's actually quite simple. Grab any one of the number of protective films that's out there for the iPad, place it on your device, study the dinner menu, find an appropriate plate for your meal through a Google image search, then plop the food on your iPad. Shiinaneko dubbed this the iDish, and showed off a variety of dishes using his iPad as a plate. He experimented with everything from sushi to curry.
However, this is not an experiment you may not want to repeat with your own iPad. Shiinaneko reports that following his endeavours that his iPad was pretty filthy despite the film and smelled fishy. Because he tried eating curry from the flat surface, he wasn't able to scoop up the liquid, and eating from an electronic platter left a rather nasty taste in his mouth.

A little bit of moisture goes a long way to ruining electronics.
@redcard umm....pretty much every laptop or netbook I know of out there has a real keyboard, proper 16x9 display, a webcam, can view ALL websites properly (i.e. runs flash), lets me copy files to and from the device easily, has connectivity with no stupid dongles...need I go on?

And no, the Ipad is way better for browsing the web and media consumption than any crappy cheap-ass netbook.
I've owned numerous netbooks. They suck. Keep thinking that it's useful cos you paid $200 for it. It isn't.
Netbooks suck and you know it.
And learn to use the comment system.
So what do we walk away with here? Your iPad will make your food taste bad and is difficult to clean if you use it as a plate. Noted.

July 28 2010 at 10:24 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply@redcard yeah because there are no other devices that do all those things A LOT better are there?
July 28 2010 at 9:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere's not many that I can think of.
Enlighten us
You'd think a sheet of plexiglass would work better than a protective film covering... or perhaps even foregoing the cost of the iPad and using that money to, ya know, go out to a real restaurant?
Still, I got a chuckle out of this. It's funnier when Letterman does it though.
It seems that people are just desperate to find any use for their sexy - but ultimately totally without purpose - toy.

Woody, you really need to try the iPad before you judge it. I have one and I believe it to be a far more revolutionary device than the iPhone/smartphone. (And I don't use it for entertainment I use it for work.)
What is my basis for suggesting this? Well 10 years ago and 5 years ago I always carried two things with me on business: my laptop and my phone. Nowadays I carry an iPad and a phone, and I can't see me ever going back to a laptop.
What are the killer apps for me? Maps - I have the 3G iPad with GPS (much, much better than on a smartphone), e-books (especially PDFs which I need to read quite a lot of for work), note taking (I've found that I can actually touch type quite quickly - not yet full speed - on the onscreen keyboard in landscape mode and I don't take a portable keyboard with me), and making presentations using Keynote. I've recently also started using a really nice mind mapping app.
The thing you won't "get" about the iPad, unless you actually have one and use it for a while is how unique the user experience actually is. There is just a world of difference, for example, in web browsing. You are actually touching and manipulating a webpage directly using your hands, rather than poking at it from arm's length with a mouse. But, combined with this, you still get the full rich web experience instead of a cut down smartphone browser view.
The other good news is that this is only the first generation; the device will simply get better and better over time with more app development and updated iOS versions and improved hardware from Apple. For example, I see FaceTime and video conferencing just around the corner. And an iPad with a retina display would be absolutely mind-blowing!
You know, you can use it to browse the Internet, use email, music, video, podcasts as well as the 1000s of apps available.
Totally pointless, eh?
