Capcom and Bioware disappointed in iPhone app performance

We've heard a lot of interesting things from big companies on the App Store -- some of them have released games and apps with not a lot of success compared to more high-profile indie groups, while some seem to have nailed down a little bit of profit from Apple's platform. Capcom is apparently finding itself in that first group -- the company's latest financial reports state that it is fairly disappointed in the performance of its App Store titles. Resident Evil 4 sales have "increased gradually," while even more anticipated apps like Street Fighter IV and Phoenix Wright have only "achieved their projected sales." Which may be good news, but it's not exactly a glowing result for Capcom's App Store efforts.

Meanwhile, EA's partner Bioware is licking its wounds from its first iPhone effort. Greg Zeschuk says that Mass Effect on the iPhone "wasn't even a mistake as much as we took a guess, our guess was wrong, and we learned something in the process -- that the fundamental tactile gameplay is actually the key thing on the platform." He sounds really disappointed with sales -- he says that the company originally believed a strong story could keep players interested even through fairly generic gameplay, but it turns out that iPhone gamers are more interested in the experience than the text that backs it up (not hard to see -- look at Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, or any other huge iPhone games with barely any backstory at all).

It's interesting to see big companies dealing with the App Store platform, and struggling to figure out how to implement iPhone apps. I think we'll see even more experimenting on this front from even major software studios.

From what I can tell, every ipad users I've met- when they're actually using their device for something other than:
a) trying to impress others
b) trying to convince themselves it makes a better ebook reader than a kindle or sony (it isn't)
c) watching itunes video in HD (which clearly isn't)

are casual gamers who mainly play lame, dull, time-wasting garbage like Farmville and We Rule and would not invest time or money in a 'proper' game.

Maybe they should go ahead and make a good game and it will sell well. Gameloft seems to be doing okay.

I can't believe they think that the Mass Effect iPhone game had a "strong story".

I bought it, and found it a) short and b) disappointing.

Whenever I'm considering buying a game, I look at the screenshots. If they feature that annoying "thumbstick" on the right and two buttons on the left, I don't buy it.

The key to sales on the iPhone and the iPad is having a great game. Street Fighter holds no interest to me, or many of my friends and co-workers, and Mass Effect is not something i'd want to play on the iPhone. The iPad is a different story.

Maybe the games that didn't sell weren't great games? Maybe they just assume whatever they put out should sell, or it's the "iPhone marketplace" that's to blame.

If publishers don't know that a great game is what sells, then they need to think harder about what people use their iPhone for.

Also, the iPhone and iPad are attracting different audiences. For instance, the iPhone is great for short games that can be interrupted when someone gets a call or a text message. I can't count how many games I have that if I get a call I have to start the level all over again! If it wasn't for iOS4, I think any deep game would be doomed on the iPhone.

Mass Effect would probably be better suited to the iPad, which is more designed for longer gameplay without interruption. Most people don't receive calls or SMS on their iPad (although some do, but that's their own choice), and it's perfect for a shared family gaming machine.

If Bioware were to port even a stripped-down version of one of its top-tier RPGs, like Neverwinter Nights or Knights of the Old Republic, they'd have an instant hit on their hands. Mass Effect Galaxy wasn't a game, it was "The Aristocrats."

There should be a followup article to this one.
"iPhone owners disappointed in Capcom's and Bioware's app offerings."

As for you, Bioware, get off your hineys and port Mass Effect over to OS X already. Um, please? We know you have it in you.
