Foxconn's new factory will produce 200,000 phones per day

Chinese news agency Xinhua reports that Foxconn subsidiary Futaihua Precision Electronics will build a new facility in central China's Henan provice that will primarily produce the iPhone.

Xinhua says that more than 500 employees are already working a temporary site rented from the Zhengzhou city government. Factory construction will start on August 20 and is expected to be operational in a year. Xinhua says the site will reportedly produce $13 billion (U.S.) worth of products for export, make about 200,000 phones per day and will employ nearly 200,000 workers, most of whom are expected to be from the Henan province.

We reported about Foxconn's earlier raises to its workers after reports of sucides among its workers. At the time, Foxconn said that it planned to distribute Apple production among new facilities in other areas of China.

@ Ms Lavey-would you please either confirm that gigantic production number? Or was this a case of an added zero? 200,000/day = 20mil in about three months. Wait, that actually makes sense people. Between international sales, including the expansion into China and maybe another carrier in the US, the demand could easily be there. Definately if they release iPhone nano w/OPTIONAL data plans. Could you please confirm the figured though? Thanks

Hey Apple from Cali, how about we open a plant in AMERICA and get our ppl some jobs and solve some "quality control" issues. Or does that make the margins too low? I love my iPhone 4, but it seems every few weeks apple does something else that erks me a lil. Yeah, you're in this business to make that money, but I thought you also took pride in your company & it's position as a leader. Ben Franklin-347941784 Good Faith-4. Franklin wins again.

Just read the Chinese piece. 8,000 workers for the Zhengzhou plant. Not 200,000. Foxconn is moving their plants inland, much closer to the home town of their employees.

You are completely wrong. In June employees across China's manufacturing district started going on strike demanding better wages and living conditions. (Many factories house their employees) The employees wanted a raise from the average $290 a month. The manufactures decided rather then cave to employees demands they would build a new series of plants in essentially the middle of no where (farm land) where $290 a month would seem extravagant for wages. This is seen as nothing more than a stop gap measure, and other third world countries are currently being evaluated for manufacturing.

"8,000 workers for the Zhengzhou plant."

Which part is "completely wrong"?

That would be 200,000 employees working either 3 x 8-hour shifts (66,666.67 employees per shift) or 2 x 12-hour shifts (100,000 employees per shift) or one employee = 3 phones or one employee = 2 phones per day.

remember, this is just an assembly plant..... while i bet the parts cant be produced that fast.... so as not to alleviate the demand issue, as long as screens and glass cant be made that fast

I also think there must be something lost in translation, some things just don't add up. For example 200.000 phones per day made by 200.000 workers in one factory? The ratio seems off, but I have no problems believing the part about the capacity for 200.000 PHONES, although I don't think producing 1 generic phone equals 1 iPhone.

I think something has been lost in translation here.

I find it hard to imagine a plant or complex that can hold and probably house 200,000 workers. Nor can I imagine any company having the capability to produce 200,000 iPhones a day.

I expect to see a corrected story soon.

If I am wrong, I will eat a slice of pizza, as my punishment!

If I am right I will eat a slice of pizza, as my celebration!

200,000 PER day? That's it?!? Surely they could do better than that.
