Has iPad addiction contributed to its growth?
There's a short post over at the Business Insider about the author's view of the success of the iPad, based on how interested (e.g., addicted) his kids are in the device. It got me thinking -- is the fact that kids love the iPad a good measure of its success? Well, yes and no.In my gaming experience, technology of this kind can get outdated pretty quickly if something new comes to market. The minute something new and more interesting hits the stores -- and kids are speaking of the wonder of these new devices to their friends -- the older devices are suddenly not so hip and cool anymore.
I do wonder, though, how many iPad purchasers have found that other family members have stolen away with the device enough times, that they've just gone out and bought another iPad? Or maybe even two? While kids might be addicted to the fun an iPad can provide, their addiction is just taking the fun (and work) away from us adults!
Have you bought more than one iPad because of the addiction it's brought to the rest of your family?

I haven't purchased an iPad yet and to be honest it is difficult to resist. However the rational person in me says that this is a Rev one device and that one should avoid rev once devices. The rev one shortcomings I see are the lack of RAM and the full compliment of sensors that iPhone comes with.
So I'm holding out for rev two with at least more RAM and hopefully the required sensors built in. Honestly it isn't easy to do, for my needs the iPad would be a far better device to carry around for the most part. I just came back for a little vacation and frankly iPad would have been handy to have.
Speaking of which Apple really needs to build in the SD port too! IPad would make one nice management system for trip pics. Plus SD is a great way to transport a few iMovies.

PS
The issue of rev one is funny because IPad literally looks like one of the best rev one products to hit the market in years from any company. That is a tall order and I have to give Steve Jobs a lot of credit in getting the core of iPad right and consumer ready.

I think your poll should also have asked how many family members versus how many iPads...which in my case would be total saturation. Okay, it's just me and my one, but still. When I took mine to visit my brother, his wife, and two 16-year-olds, I didn't see it the whole time I was there.

My wife use it all the time but only when my 5years old daughter let her. I will buy two more as soon as I can. Never saw anything like this. This is turning to something big. Steve is a genious.
August 02 2010 at 3:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe funny thing is how many guys buy an iPad, while their girlfriends/wives scoff and say things like "men and their toys," yada yada. And then two weeks later the girls are monopolizing it and we have to go buy another one. typical.

Then within a few years, everybody was using them. I think the iPad is following this model. :-)
August 02 2010 at 11:58 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy iPad is practically raising my 19 month old son for me. I can't use it because every time he sees it he comes running saying "ipat, ipat, ipat". My loss of the device aside, the educational apps available are great, even the blown up iPhone versions. People are constantly amazed by what he can do. He unlocks it himself, finds the app he wants among 5 different screens and plays the games. He Loves fish school, he loves baa baa black sheep, itsy bitsy spider, and a spelling game I can't remember the name of. I know he's just matching the shapes of the letters but its amazing to see him drag the tiles to the right spot and spell the name of an animal. It does seem like a waste of of 64GB 3G so I may be getting him his own wifi model though.
August 02 2010 at 11:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought one for myself. Loved it so much, bought one for my wife and sold both of our MacBooks. Bought an iMac as the single Mac for the house to do the things the iPad can't. It's been awesome.

Hmmm.... chocolate
Kids are constantly trying to get the iPad off me to watch movies or play games. I can see buying another one for general household use fairly soon.
