iPhone 4 prices from around the world

Now that the iPhone 4 is available around most of the world, iFun designed this interesting little infographic that compares the various prices of the handset around the globe. Note that all of these prices are in Euros, and that they all reflect the out-of-contract price -- because the US iPhones are locked to the AT&T network currently, our country doesn't appear on this list.

But if you want to buy an unlocked iPhone elsewhere in the world, you should probably go with Hong Kong, where an unlocked 16gb phone will set you back US $653. Italy sells the costliest iPhones, with the price reaching up over US$1000 there for an unlocked phone.

This whole thing is really just more of a fun comparison rather than a really solid analysis -- most people who want an iPhone will probably buy it in the country where they live, especially if they need a certain contract. But it is interesting to see just where Apple has determined it can go higher on the price, either because of certain tariffs or shipping that must be paid, or just because the demographic calls for it.

I am in Singapore right now and the price is similar to HK's. This morning I went to an Apple re-seller (no Apple Store here) and they asked me 1100SGD (610€/ 844US$) for a standalone 16GB iPhone4. I told them that on singapore apple website the price is 888SGD (490€ /682US$ as showed in the chart), and they explained to me that that's the online price, I have to order from the web to get that price, otherwise in the shop to get an iPhone 4 without contract the price is higher. I came back home and placed the order.

So, it doesn't mean that you can just walk in a shop somewhere around the world and get the price showed in the chart.

Regarding the cost of living vs local salaries, it's relevant when one wants to look at the "quality of living" in different parts in the world (ie how many Big Macs can the average person afford, forget about the price in monetary terms but replace the disposable income by the number of goods he/she can consume, Big Macs for example). In this specific case, this is not the objective though. The objective, in my understanding is to answer the question "where's the cheapest iPhone 4 in the world so that I'll get it from there to use it in my country?"
So we have to consider:
1. Exchange rate of all the countries vs my local currency to compare (the comparison in the graph gives a rough idea)
2. Tax? Well, it's not that simple. First of all, I don't think Apple will accept an address that is not in the same country as the Apple website. It would probably "suggest" the country of the shipping address. Thus, cannot just order from Apple Hong Kong, not pay sales tax, and get it shipped to your country (and probably pay Duty...etc). I think the only way would be to go to Hong Kong (or know someone or a business that does it), buy it physically at Apple, get the tax back at the Airport (in the case of a non-Hong Kong citizen getting the phone), and go back home happily with the new phone.
3. Some countries, such as Canada, have been included but shouldn't given that the phones are locked with specific carriers. If they're locked, you can unlocked them "illegally" but then you won't be able to update the firmware... etc (I'm not sure if you can unlock it with Fido or Rogers "legally"; I know in the UK you can get it unlocked by the service provider, thus, "legally" so you can answer "YES" when iTunes brings you the Good News!)
These are my 2 cents.
Cheers!

It's really...really sad...Portugal is the most expensive country in the world to buy an iphone 4. :(((

I wonder how the graph would look like with currency rates reset at pre-Greek-crisis levels (i.e EUR/USD 1.44, USD/CHF 1.1, etc.)

Here in Switzerland, the 32Gb would be sold at roughly 600 Euros and in HK it would be 526 Euros.

Not sure about you guys but here in HK we needs to wait 2 weeks on average to get an iPhone 4. But yes it is fairly cheap here.

Competition is hell to corporation but heaven to consumer.

The comparative prices should not be in Euros, but in BigMacs.

The people will usually buy in their own country except in alot of countries wither iPhone is not released or released at exobirant prices and very late when the new model is about to be released.

This comparison is useful and me such people.

While the price for Finland is right, the phone is available just through one carrier and locked.

Italy was a big source for unlocked iPhone 3GS's. Perhaps the local carriers decided to cash the situation with the iPhone 4 -- without realizing that Apple would sell the phone directly unlocked around Europe..

As for Italy, it has to be taken into account that 20% of that price is VAT, and that a solid 30 or 40 euros are to be paid because you may use any device with memory to handle pirated content (the infamous "Bondi tax"). How that's going to deter pirates from doing so is beyond me; indeed, it would rather make them feel even more relaxed about it, since they paid already.
And such a bestiality is applied to anything, from blank DVD-Rs (which are also plagued by the "SIAE tax"; SIAE is the italian equivalent of RIAA) to hard disks to DVRs to microSD cards to camcorders with an SSD inside. My country is really ridiculous.

It's sad that Italians have to suffer under such governments, but there's hope for you yet!

The European Parliament is sure to get stronger and more dominant, at least you'll have *some* reasonable people to lead the way.

Or the Northern Italians will just split the country in half...
