Game Center not supported on iPhone 3G and second gen iPod touch

But if you have an iPhone 3G and were looking forward to trying the new app from Apple, you'll have to change plans. Either go grab yourself an iPhone 4 (which is what I'm still planning to do -- my original iPhone is looking super old at this point), or stick with the social gaming networks that you've already got access to.

There's bad news for those of you with old iPhones. Apple has confirmed that the latest beta of Game Center is a no-go for anything older...

Just a note, there are some pretty expensive phones (outside of America) that receive updates constantly, but never receive any new features in the update. It was still inconceivable that a manufacturer would continuously update a phone, giving it a new lease of life.
I'm not defending what Apple's been doing to the iPhone 3G, though.
My jailbroken 3G is all I need. Video recording: Check. A gaggle of awesome apps: Check. Every game I ever wanted on it: Check.
Three major system components I use frequently: Installous, Cydia, and Winterboard. You have those, you need nothing else.
They can keep "Game Center". o_0
One thing I like about the iPhone 4, is it's MiFi 4.0 app. Something about turning my very phone into a wifi hotspot, just tickles my fancy.
iPhone 4, and iPad. Here I come. =]
I'm an Apple enthusiast. Cut me some slack. =P ;) lolz
Good, I dont need it. What I need is a Touch that "just works"

I did not buy a new Iphone for Game Centre. That's pretty ridiculous! I don't care what you think these phones can, can't or should do. I trust Apple's judgement over yours any day of the week. You;'re just someone with an opinion.
$600 every 2 years isn't a great deal. $25 a month? You probably spend more on hair dye and waxing
man, my ipod touch 2nd gen is officially obsolete. I guess i am looking towards getting the 4th gen this september, to accompany my iphone 4

Ah, this is the classic rebuttal. The problem is, you're comparing very old candybar style phones that cost maybe $99 off-contract to the $600 off-contract iPhone/smartphone. Sure, there was a time when cell phones were bricks the size of a shoebox that you carried around. What's your point? I thought Apple's devices were so much beyond anything we've seen before, yet when it's convenient people like you always want to compare them to the ancient devices of yore. Quit moving the goal posts.
A $600 device should last more than 2 years, on that I think the vast majority of consumers would agree. This is especially true when you're talking about Apple intentionally locking these devices out of new features that they are more than capable of supporting them. I mean, home wallpapers? Apple's very limited "multitasking?" Just like Flash, you can believe Apple's claims of what these devices can do, or you can look at what jailbroken devices do every as proof of that they can handle. At that point, you just have to acknowledge that Apple is gaming the system for no reason other than to force you into frequent, perpetual upgrades. It's not that this is a tactic unique to Apple, it's just that the Apple fanatics refuse to accept the truth.
As for "if you want the latest tech, you gotta pay for it," people like you are what keeps Apple rolling in dough. Game Center basically stepped in and stole Open Feint's market right out from under them, then made it some premium service that only works on newer devices. The same thing will happen with iAds and everything else Apple decides to gaffle from developers.
I know what you're talking about. There;s only so much you can do with 128MB of RAM.
Time to ask mommy for that early Thanksgiving present, kids!
Some people are stupid. Pre-IPhone, not many phones EVER got a firmware upgrade. Remember those days?
You don't have to buy the latest handset, but don't expect if to be able to do the same thing as a device almost twice as powerful.
Beenyweenies, you're saying you want 5-year support. Who are you to decide 5 years is adequate?
You want the latest tech, you gotta pay for it. Moans like this are probably best kept to Consumerist.com
4.0 might be bad on an iPhone 3G, but I've had no problems on my second generation iPod touch. I even jailbroke for multitasking and wallpaper and it still runs fine
August 05 2010 at 2:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou know what? I have to agree. The iPhone 3G was well capable of shooting videos *when* it has been jailbroken. Not to mention no multitasking for older phones (sure the 3G can't run too many apps, but 3 - 5 is fine by me), no home screen wallpaper (WTF is with that?) and *a lot more*.
Since when has Apple become a monopolist?
