iPhone 4 unlock now available
Here's good news for iPhone 4 users who've been waiting for a carrier unlock. The iPhone Dev Team has released an update to Ultrasn0w, its iPhone unlocking client, that's compatible with the iPhone 4. When run on an jailbroken iPhone 4, Ultrasn0w will allow you to use a carrier other than AT&T in the US.
It's a very simple process, as the video above demonstrates. Just note that jailbreakme.com is used in the demonstration, which makes use of a PDF exploit found in the iOS software. Also, jailbreaking your iPhone may void its warranty; proceed entirely at your own risk.
The Dev-Team first announced that they had been able to unlock the iPhone 4 last month, but only released the updated version of Ultrasn0w now. If freedom from AT&T is your thing, have at it.

I call for a boycott of TUAW until they agree to remove all illegal, EULA breaking posts on how to circumvent and hack Apple devices.

But, by all means, don't let facts get in the way of a good rant...
Are you the REALLY REAL Steve Jobs? Really?
...it's legal...
If I jailbreak my phone, will it brick it or anything else? I just don't want to screw it up.

If that fails, take it to the Apple Store and tell them to replace it for you. I did that 3 times with faulty iPhone 3G hardware (every time it was jailbroken).
Kind of unrelated, as my phone is not unlocked, just jailbroken.
Is anyone having issues installing *updates* from the AppStore? I am able to purchase, download and install new apps, but there is an update for IM+ that i am unable to install. It shows up as an available update, but when i try to open it i get "Cannot connect to iTunes Store". Wonder if this Apple is blocking jailbroken phones somehow, or just a glitch somewhere...
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Never mind. This was an AppStore glitch. It appears that the app name has changed, so i just search for it and was able to install it right over the old one.
Got me scared for a second. haha
Nope. Just downloaded an update to several App Store apps no problem.
Is your phone turned on? =P
Works like a charm. If your iPhone is already activated as mine was. My problem: A friend has an AT&T iPhone 3GS without a dedicated AT&T sim. It needs to bee activated to even get into the net. Is it possible to activate the device without a AT&T sim so he can use the new jailbreakme.com and the new unlock? I am glad for any help.

August 05 2010 at 10:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's most definitely "my thing" considering that when I took my AT&T locked 1stGen iPhone with me when I moved to Germany and I upgraded it, I couldn't even use it as an iPod. And now that I'm back in the States with my T-Mobile Deutschland locked 3GS, I can finally use it again as a phone. Carriers not unlocking phones when you're out of your contract period is even more baffling to me.
August 05 2010 at 10:33 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI actually thought you had a right to demand an unlock after your contract period is over .. at least for the German TMobile phone you should have. I think the law is that they have to unlock it after that time .. usually they allow you to buy yourself out of the contract especially if you are moving abroad (speaking for Germany again that is).
But then again .. Tmobiles iPhone contracts are beyond ridiculous price wise .. glad i got mine here in Denmark. Awesome customers right in that regard.
T.
It's not "baffling", but it's not justified. They do it to keep you with them, which is a totally illegitimate justification once the contract has expired.
There's no law requiring US carriers to unlock, but both TMo and AT&T do it for phones other than the iPhone if you ask nicely.
What are all my other carrier choices,
that allow me simultaneous data/call AND realize the full 3G speeds on my iPhone4,
here in the US?
This is more about being able to use other wireless provider SIM cards when traveling, vs. AT&T Int'l roaming rates.
