PlayOn's Web app brings Hulu to Mobile Safari

The good news is that PlayOn's Web app allows you to access popular Flash-based sites like Hulu and Netflix on your iPhone and (soon) your iPad. However, the bad news is that there are a whole lot of hoops to jump through before you can get there. You've got to sign up with PlayOn (a subscription service that streams online media to a variety of different places); there's a 14-day trial, but otherwise, it'll cost you around US$50 a year. In addition, you've got to have an app running that's only Windows-based in order to connect (yeah).

If you get all of that going, though, PlayOn has an HTML5-driven app online right now that will allow you to pull up content and watch it in a mobile browser. The company is still trying to hammer out an official App Store app, but all reports say that the current service works quite well. If you happen to be a PlayOn member already, and you have an iPhone (the iPad software is coming soon), that's a nice bonus for you.

Of course, Hulu Plus already has an app of its own out, and Netflix does as well, so if there's just one site that you need, there's probably an easier way to do it than running an app on a Windows PC. Still, more options are nice, and it's good to see someone trying to make some waves outside of Apple's closed App Store ecosystem.

PlayOn has saved my life.

PlayOn is rediculously cheap for what you get. It streams Hulu, Netflix, SpikeTV, Ultimate Fighter, and Sci-fi to anyo of my media devices.

With the new software, you can even have mobile access and access PlayOn media from another Wi Fi area like school or hotel, or over 3g. Its insane the amount of innovation behind PlayOn and for me is a life saver. Anyone who wants to save money and have media versatility should buy a lifetime subscription, I did, and will never regret it!

" and Netflix does as well"

For iPad only right now - a pretty big omission in that statement if you ask me.

It would seem another example of benefits is that if you have an iPhone but no iPad, it's a possibility if you absolutely must have streaming netflix.

Summer is almost over netflix, where's my iPhone app??? :)

It costs $40 a year, and you can do a one time payment for $79. It's not perfect but it's replaced my cable for the last 7 months, so overall I'm up a lot of cash.

The other advantage of PlayOn is it supports additional services BEYOND Hulu, such as Comedy Central or MLB.tv, and if you are a lifetime member, you don't need to pay the $10/month for Hulu Plus to watch any Hulu. For people with Media Center PCs in their house (I'm Mac only, except for TVs which run cheap Acer Revo $250 systems), running something like XBMC, you can spend $80 now, and have all this content forever on your TVs, and now your iOS devices. I was grandfathered in from their earlier model, and got it all for $40 lifetime.

Nope, I'm not suggesting that. I'm just suggesting that you can watch Hulu on your iPhone without paying $10/month. If you need what's on Plus (early reviews aren't exactly pocketbook inspiring), then you need plus. But if regular Hulu works, this is the only option I know of that isn't tied to a monthly bill.
