Found footage: The inevitable Windows 7 tablet vs. iPad video
When Microsoft decided to drop the rather interesting Courier slate concept, some of us here at TUAW expected to see a parade of Windows
In this video, you're seeing one of the competitors, a rather thick slate made by Hanvon, going head to head against a stock iPad. The extra chunkiness of this tablet, which appears to boast a 16 x 9 aspect ratio, is due to the addition of a USB port, SD card reader, and ... a camera. For some odd reason, the manufacturer also chose to add a trackpad, which seems redundant considering the device already has a touch screen.
On the one hand, the device is fast. It bests the iPad in many of the side-by-side comparisons. On the other hand, it uses the patented Microsoft method of putting all programs into the Start menu, which appears towards the end of this video and looks like it would be impossibly frustrating to navigate.

I completely agree... pages of static icons is rather plain and un-interesting. I like the way Android has it, with the ability to add widgets and have pages of widgets and moving your app icons where you like. I shouldn't have to go in an app to see the weather, then leave the app and hunt down another app icon and go into that app to check my email. I want a little control and customization.. that's what I want.

They are just making a mini computer. People who have iPads are not looking for a mini computer we just want our iPads. If only ALL of these companies would make that are NOT trying to be iPad / iPhone killers they might just come up with a product that could compete. People who love the iPad are not going to be impress with that device. Can I run my iPad / iPhone apps on that device? No! I'm happy with my iPad. If they want to make an iPad killer then they should have done it BEFORE the iPad came out! Come late to the market makes you A$$ out!
LOL
Windows plain sucks. It looks awfull and it so freckin slow compared to Apple. Just watch it die the longer you use it and the more you install on it. One word, "Garbage". It is and will forever be Garbage and I don't care how you wanna defend it. Windows SUCKS.

August 10 2010 at 8:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe fact that you are comparing a full-fledged desktop OS to the iPad says a lot about the iPad :)
August 10 2010 at 5:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot really. The video doesn't show the gazillion other things the non-ipad tablet can do. Like support multiple users, for instance.

First iPad is a very underpowered rev one device. It is obviously short on RAM so comparing it to a device released almost a year later is sily. Especially when Apple will likely rev iPad in time for the mass Win Tablet arrivals.
In other words get back to us when these Win tablets are widely available. Further by that time Apple should have a Cortex A9 based iPad with a suitable amount of RAM for sale.
Further having a SD slot or a USB port does not add bulk to a device. Especially in the case of an SD port. This really erodes the writers credibility. Just looking inside the iPad reveals plenty of space for such ports. It is enough to make one barf when seeing such comments in print.
Finnally it has already been pointed out but the big question is run time versus device weight. They might actually get better app performance in some cases but if that means two hours of battery life it isn't even in the same ball park as iPad.
They keyboard looked miserably narrow. And it was somewhat amusing that they took three attempts at the video to launch... whatever it was. Doubly weird that they compared Google Earth (native-ish) on the Hanvon, to Google Earth on the iPad using airplane movement mode, but not the standard mode, at least not initially.
Airplane movement mode REQUIRES a mouse/keyboard. It isn't catered to standard gestures.
But, had Earth been completely vanilla, the initial "awkwardness" wouldn't exist.
Christ, typing fail:
(1) Took three attempts to launch whatever program, at the END OF the video.
(2) Now that I think of it, does GEarth Mobile even have airplane movement mode? I've used it on a Desktop, I haven't used GEarth Mobile enough to know.
The iOS way is disorganized for many apps, and folders aren't really a perfect solution. But the Win7 way (start menu) is difficult to navigate with point/touch devices; on most implementations, the hit locations for individual items in the Start menu prove to be far too small.
I.e., both are flawed; the iOS model breaks down with too many apps installed, while (as the video shows) the Win7 model is too imprecise to reliably pick a specific app on a touch device.
There's probably some third model out there that people haven't thought of yet. (Spotlight on iOS doesn't count, though I admit that's how I launch many things.)
Pfff guys, it's windows, give it a rest, it's about time they will burry that dinosaur. Even with a 2010 dress it remains a dinosaur compared to os x or ios4 . i need to run it for 1 stupid app in parallels and trust me it may be waaay better then Vista, it's still Microsoft Windows, and it will remain a fossile. Nothing competes with ease of use of an Apple OS driven system. Btw that video is biass as you see the iPad user hesitating when selecting stuff, so its BS.

PS Her real name is Neil, or something. It's got bigger issues to deal with than IOS. Poor soul.
