Madden 2011 out for iPad and iPhone

This year has just flown by -- it's almost that time again, when the leaves start to change color, the kids head back to school, and footballs fill the air. That also means the new Madden is now out, and for the first time, EA has brought the game to the iPad. By all accounts, it's pretty good -- the graphics are not quite comparable to the console versions, but they look nice, and you also get the ability to draw out hot routes and use an adapted version of the GameFlow feature from the console versions. Plus, the iPad version is also getting multiplayer soon, as well as a "Vintage Voltage Football" mode, a Madden-style homage to the old electric football games.

The only drawback is that the game's not cheap -- EA is going all out with a price for the iPad of $12.99. The game's also available for the iPhone for $7.99, which ain't real cheap, either. But this is EA's most premium game on the iOS to date, as well as their perpetual moneymaker every year around this time, so if they're going to try inching up the prices on their iOS titles, this would be the one to do it on.

That said, EA's also been learning the value of the sale recently, so I'll bet that if you give this one a month or two, you'll be able to pick it up for much cheaper. Too bad there's no lite version yet -- the football fans who've taken the leap seem to really enjoy the game so far.

NCAA Football 11 is out now. I get my rosters from NCAA Football 11 Rosters. Where are you getting yours?

Poor article. Madden NFL 10 sported a price of $7.99 upon its release, with a hike UP to $9.99 shortly their after. A quick check on appshopper.com will confirm this. Also, EA's OTHER "high-end" iOS game, Mirror's Edge, debuted at $14.99.

They're not "inching up the prices," they're just treating their high-end games the same.

It's reasonable.

I haven't played Madden since NFL 2K made a better game, then Madden went all Microsoft buying the NFL rights so no one else could compete with them. That's why EA needs to charge so much.

Rivals RealSoccer 2010 as the best sports game on the iPad. Still a little clumsy. I've found you need to use your left thumb for the direction pad, and leave your right hand free to touch players on the screen. Taking some adjustment, but happy so far. Tied at 14 at the half versus the Jets. Brandon Marshall has 2 long TDs though!

$7.99 is "not cheap" for a professionally produced game? Seriously, how cheap are you?

Cheap or not is always relative to similar offers. In the appstore there are not that many games in that price range, in fact most games .. even really well build titles .. are less then 3$. A direct competitor, NFL 2011, is half the price at 3.99$.
On top of that, EA hasn't really been the fastest to fix anything with their released apps, leaving really annoying bugs wallow that could kill all fun playing the game. Leaving the "professionally build" with a giant questionmark.

So yeah .. in comparison .. Madden is not cheap.

I have the original madden for the iphone and while it was one of my favorite games, it took EA many many months (possibly a year?) to finally fix the bug where the game would crash and you lose an entire season.

After that fiasco, I have a hard time buying anything EA has to offer.

I completely agree. I was well ready to pay the price, although it seemed pretty hefty at first. But EA just didn't deliver the quality app I had expected and they seem amazingly slow fixing anything.

Don't get me wrong .. I am more than willing to pay 8$ or 15$ or even more for a good game .. and especially Madden has a pretty large featureset .. but then I expect the game to be supported and work flawlessly. Some of those bugs are so burning obvious that I doubt they did a proper test cycle with the game.

PS: I snapped a couple EA titles when they were on sale a couple weeks ago for a buck each .. NFS is pretty fun.
