Apple patents "Exciter" technology for devices, including a "cyclocomputer"

Patently Apple has news of a new patent filed by Apple for a technology that it calls the Exciter. At present, wirelessly trading information between iPhones can be a bit of a hassle, since both phones have to find each other and then sync up. But the "Exciter" technology would simply keep an eye out for another phone that's willing to share information, and then when a certain signal is detected (it could be light-based, sound-based, or any other type of emitted information), the two devices would share information (contacts, calendar information, photos, or text) as necessary.

It's an interesting idea, but the application is even more interesting. Along with the usual suspects for possible Apple devices that would use this app or technology, Apple has listed a "cyclocomputer," which is yet another hint that Apple is working on some kind of bike-related mobile device. In this case, two bikers would pass each other, their devices would recognize that there is a device to share information with, and the exchange would take place.

It sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, as with all of these patents, Apple is just locking down any ideas that it has. Just because this technology is outlined and listed in a patent application doesn't mean that there's a project right around the corner; it doesn't guarantee that we'll definitely see this product. But as always, it's fascinating to see where Apple's thinking is going. The company that originally released the Mac has now become the world's biggest portable device company, and it certainly seems like it plans to continue moving in that direction.

I think you're a little off on the cyclocomputer. It's not for bicycles. It would be for exercise equipment. For example. Your iPhone or iPod would be able to get data right off the exercise bike and apply it to an app. Much like Nike+.

It would be cool if all the exercise equipment you used in the gym could send all the data to your iOS device. Like reps, speed, time, distance, etc. Then an app customizes a workout for your defined goals. Kinda like Wii Fit. Maybe an encouraging voice comes over when it knows you need to push it some more. Like a virtual personal trainer.

Why they are not using Bluetooth? Maybe this method they are working on drains the battery less? Higher bandwidth? Doesn't require pairing. It just works. Also, Apple wouldn't mind it to be patented proprietary technology so other makers couldn't see their idea and just rip it.

I really don't think it for bike riders to exchange info. C'mon.

I would be satisfied with complete fast wireless syncing of all data between mobile devices and computers and the cloud-going in any direction and including lots of storage.

I use "Bump" to share contact cards, photos, calendars, etc. with the iPhone already. You have to physically bump the two iPhones (fairly close anyway), but that's about as easy as I would want to make it.

Why would I want the information of a person I've passed in the street? Seems perfect for horndogs though. Yeah - Horndogs and information hoarders will love this app.

Hmmm - on second thought.

Palms had this what, 10 years ago, using IR. You could beam your "business card" to another Palm.

Of course, you had to point the Palms at each other, but that was actually a reasonable restriction. The innovation here is doing this wirelessly - meaning non-directional-, and the consequences could be implicit sharing as well as explicit sharing.
