Android sales worldwide pass iPhone totals for Q2 2010

Gartner is reporting that worldwide sales of mobile phones running Android OS have surpassed iPhone sales for the second quarter of 2010. 10.6 million phones running the Android OS shipped during the last quarter, representing a 17.2% 2010 market share, compared to 8.74 million iOS phones, representing a 14.2% 2010 market share. The two top dogs are still Symbian, with 41.2% of the market and RIM with 18.2% of the market.

Google's cheerleaders may cry foul, but to be fair to Apple, during the quarter they shipped exactly 3 phone models with iOS on them while carriers shipped over 20 different models of Android phones. We could also mention that a true Apples-to-apples comparison would include the non-phone iOS devices (the iPod touch and iPad) which continue to expand the iOS installed base at a furious pace.

Also, Apple was dealing with a transition to iPhone 4, which lead to constraint issues with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. As Gartner pointed out in its report, "Apple's sales would have been higher if it had not had to face tight inventory management in preparation for the arrival of the iPhone 4 at the end of the second quarter of 2010. Apple also suffered from some supply constraint on the new device. We expect that a wider global roll out of iPhone 4 will sustain Apple's sales momentum throughout the second half of 2010."

Will the rest of 2010 be the Revenge of the iOS? The fact that the iPhone 4 is still sold out at over half of Apple's US retail stores is a big check mark in the "yes" column. Whichever way this goes, it looks like one thing is certain -- RIM is virtually sure to lose its second place position next quarter as both Android and iOS phones increase in popularity and market saturation.

You can walk into any carrier's store and buy an Android right now. iPhone.....get on a waiting list. Supply is not a moot point. The fact that Android is not exclusive to any one carrier in the US is also important.

Wait, which version of Android are we talking about? There are still phones sold with Android 1.6 that may or may not get upgraded. So the Android bunch is large, but it's also an ugly one, even more so than Windows Mobile.

Oracle doesn't seem that impressed with Android:

"Oracle has mounted a no-holds-barred legal attack on Google's Android operating system in a lawsuit that accuses the internet giant of deliberately infringing patents and copyrights Oracle holds for the Java platform."

Of course Android outsold Apple. But really, we iPhone users don't care. We're used to being a high-quality second place product. Microsoft outsold Apple in the early days, and Andriod will outsell it now. BFD.

And Apple will continue to invent the impossible, and point the way for other companies to follow in their footsteps. Andriod folks shouldn't pat themselves on the back too much. Their technology is the result of standing on the shoulders of what Apple pioneered.

like i said, this is a similar repeat to what happened in PCs.

apple had the field to itself, very profitable, but it remained very greedy and microsoft basically just licensed its OS to many manufacturers, so of course today globally windows dominates more than 90%+ of the market.

here again, apple sticks to trying to do everything in order to garner all the profits, and again we get another company simply giving its OS to multiple hardware manufacturers.

guess what's gonna happen in the end.

the only difference this time is that apple never even got close to dominating this ecosystem because of Nokia and Blackberry, but you get the point.

and to the person (marc) who says apple is so profitable anyways, you DO know apple went nearly bankrupt before (after microsoft windows wrested control of the PC) and had to be rescued by microsoft right? THINGS CHANGE.

What on earth are you smoking?
Explain specifically what Apple did that you refer to as greedy?

Do you realize that by market cap Apple is the 2nd largest US public corporation? That by market cap they are bigger than Microsoft or Google?

Do you realize that Apple has 46 billion in cash and equivalents in it's bank account, which is a lot more than most companies?

Do you realize that businesses exist to make money?

I am sure when you were little you regularly peed in your pants. If you are smart you don't do that anymore.

It is specious to suggest that because Apple had financial difficulties 15 years ago before the return of Steve Jobs that they are likely to have financial problems again.

As a matter of fact keeping Apple financially healthy is why they focus on being profitable and having cash to meet their needs. So on the one hand you suggest that they could have financial difficulties in the future and on the other hand you fault them for taking steps to maintain profitability and cash flow?

I am sure Apple would be better managed if you were running it; but I expect that they will suffer along without you.

Android appears to be the iOS beater. Gonna happen - period.

Google and Aplle are destined to destroy Microsoft, but unfortunately Apple will remain the number two when things shake out.

Um....Android is on how many different devices...? Oh, Nevermind...

I just don't think Steve Jobs and Apple sit around being sad about "not selling as much as XYZ Company"

Just as sure as Lamborghini, Ducati or Porsche don't care if Ford or GM sells more blue 4 door sedans than them...Seriously, they don't care, nor will they change their strategy or ethos because of it.

This entire article and familiar dialogue of "most sales" misses the entire mindset of Steve Jobs' goal...It makes sense on a TV show like "The Apprentice" but that's it.

They don't seem to have any intention of being dominant in any area except one: Being the BEST OS ( and providing the best user experience and most beautifully designed products and systems...) and letting people decide if it is worth it or not...

So far, it seems to be working out pretty well for them...
