Rumor: Verizon iPhone to have large screen, new processor

It's Friday, and that must mean Verizon-on-the-iPhone rumor time. This one comes from the SyFy Network's DVICE blog of all places and is all about the hardware. They're claiming that an "inside source" has provided some specs on a new Verizon handset.

According to DVICE's source, the iPhone will feature a larger screen than what the iPhone 4 has, as well as an internal antenna (we imagine that's a bit of a sore spot with Apple these days). They also report that Verizon "insisted" on an internal antenna.

As for the display, expect something like 3.7 inches. Finally, DVICE suggests that a zippy 1.2GHz chip will run the whole thing. It's all speculation, folks, so keep that in mind. Do you buy it?

I think it's a whole bunch of BS. That being said, a Verizon iPhone with an improved antenna would be an instant buy for me. Antennagate prevented me from upgrading to the iPhone4 and renewing my AT&T contract. I'd have nothing to lose and everything to gain from a Verizon phone.

I hope verizon gets the iPhone. If so my plan is going smoothly. All these idiots would drop AT&T to go to verizon and free up my network. Then verizon customers would have AT&T's problem and mine will be fixed. Trust me current verizon customers don't want an iPhone. Would be cool to be able to FaceTime with my girlfriend finally. Oh BTW apple would never allow a company to dictate hardware design.

Makes sense that it's a little bit bigger and hence slightly larger screen. It's a known fact that CDMA devices require a bit more/larger hardware. Apple can't shove all the CDMA circuitry in the existing iP4 casing, so have to make it a bit bigger.

Ya right! And I am the Easter Bunny. I'll believe that when I see it in my own hands!

Utter nonsense.

Verizon is supposedly moving away from CDMA to LTE (which AT&T are also doing). LTE is an evolution of UMTS (and besides doesn't EV-DO/CDMA2000 top speed something like 2.4Mbps? I'm streaming at much higher speeds to my iPhone on the HSDPA networks here in Hong Kong)

Again as noted by some other commenters, the economies of scale involved for Apple just wouldn't be profitable (or logical).

Whilst Verizon is certainly very very very potentially profitable with it's 90M+ subscribers... this is still JUST the USA. With how the iPhone has rolled out internationally, on multiple mobile networks all operating on the GSM for 2G, UMTS for 3G (with HSDPA that provides far higher speeds as I stated earlier)... In the global sense? The iPhone 4 hardware and manufacturing lines are fixed.

If we're going to see any changes in the hardware, give it another 11 Months and we'll see what the iPhone 5 looks like... that will prolly be an LTE phone ready for 4G networks... and hey that'll be 2011... Didn't Verizon say they've been rolling out LTE since 2009?

Lol, these people that say "3.7 inch screen would be great"! Less than a quarter inch larger??? Yup that would make all the difference in the world, no more scrolling around on web pages like you have to do on the tiny 3.5 inch screen! Boneheads!

Apple is not going to build a bigger iPhone for Verizon with a different chip inside; it's just silly speculation.

Where I live in the midwest, The so-called Big V is not the best network. Verizon does not support calling and data at the same time. Enough

Apple wouldn't do that. Never.

Its not that far fetched that apple is caving into verizon. Apple needs to find a way to compete with the latest and everchanging android platform. Being stuck on ATT is not helping apple......
