PGA Championship app pushes latest scores, includes buy-up live video

The set overlap between "iPhone owners" and "fans of professional golf" isn't trivial, so it's worth mentioning that the free app for the 92nd PGA Championship is available in the App Store. You can follow along with the action at Whistling Straits this weekend in glorious Retina Display detail, and with a $1.99 in-app purchase you can get live video of marquee players through their entire rounds, or see the entire field play the course's par 3 holes. Of course, live coverage is also available at pga.com or on television.

Even without chipping in for the live streaming, there's plenty of video in the app: highlights, course overviews and instructional clips are all included gratis. The app includes customizable push notifications, so you can keep abreast of the latest news or zero in on particular players, round schedules or exceptional events (double bogeys, birdies/eagles, etc.).

If you like the PGA Championship app, there's more around the corner; the 2010 Ryder Cup App will be in the store in September.

Check out the gallery below for more views of the app.

What I think is "funny" is that the area where the PGA is being held doesn't even have AT&T 3G coverage, making this app almost useless at the event. Sure, you're there and could probably easily see leaderboards and the golfers themselves but I think this would be a handy app to have at the event. My .02. I live in Green Bay and we finally got 3G about a year ago.

It's actually against the rules to bring a cell phone or really any electronics device into the PGA grounds. They have airport-like security and do bag checks and body scans.

I was there yesterday.

That's right! I was there the last time the PGA Championships was at WS and I remember leaving my phone in the car. Sounds like they've continued doing that.

Disappointing app, considering if you navigate to site (did so via Yahoo! Sports) to watch live on an iPad, you can watch either the marquee group or the par threes right in Safari. Do the same thing on an iPhone and you are prompted to get the app in the iTunes app store.

Simply cut and paste the iPad streaming address and email it to your iPhone and you can watch the marquee group live stream from your iphone for free.

The push notifications should be standard in any golf app like this one. Unfortunately the ones in this app are spotty in terms of reliability. When it's working, it is nice.
