Foxconn hiring and relocating 400,000 workers

The recent issues at Foxconn haven't actually slowed the company down, apparently -- it has announced that it will be hiring 400,000 more workers at new plants in China, thanks to a 50 percent increase in revenue lately. The total number of people working at Foxconn will be estimated at 1.3 million. Just for comparison's sake, GM employed about 244,500 last year. Foxconn is moving almost that many workers out of its Shenzhen plant -- 170,000 of those workers will be sent to plants closer to their homes.

It's crazy to think what the company must be like -- not only are they handling ungodly amounts of people making ungodly amounts of electronic devices, but they're doing it mostly for American companies like Apple, Dell, HP, and so on. This is the giant machine that's pushing out all of those iPhones and Macs that Apple is breaking sales records with. Hopefully the new plants and relocations will help all of the issues that employees there have had in the past.

Where does it say that they're relocating anyone?

Comparing Foxconn to GM is comparing apples to bedroom slippers; a very poor analogy.

That is huge!

Sadly I don't buy into the spin put on this. Foxconn is moving out to the country side for lower cost, mostly for even cheaper labor. I would feel a lot better if their new plants where automated to reduce the abuse of humanity. All those people are basically the machinery of their plants.

Oh buy ylthe way i'm not going to equate Suicides with the working conditions. I've been around long enough to know of a few locally. It certainly wasn't working conditions that caused those. Without more info i think it is irresponsible for the press to link suicides in Foxconns plants to working conditions.

400,000 workers... and take a guess what country a majority of the things they will be building will ultimately end up in?

So while the US is struggling for jobs, China is once again on a roll... but that is to be expected seeing as how the US a long time ago was bamboozled into believing that it could survive without a strong manufacturing base by Corporate America looking to pinch pennies and right-wing politicians that think of no one but corporate interests.

Congrats America for being so easily duped
... unfortunately now we have to live with those idiotic decisions, while other countries greatly benefit at our expense.

What makes you think it will make any difference? It's still a communist country and the reason why there are so many workers is because it's cheaper to have human labor then it is to automate the factories with a lot of robotics. That's because the workers are paid crazy small sums of money for an insane amount of work. If they get injured and cannot work, they are simply replaced. No one pays for their medical needs. There is no OHSA and there are almost zero worker safety measures in place. The Chinese do not respect human life and the government does not care about it's people. They are all cogs in the machine. The employees are all paid a low flat rate and the government keeps the rest.

The workers move from distant farms to the city to work in a factory to make enough money to send home. They live in deplorable group housing. There have been enormous environmental disasters in China where extremely toxic waste was dumped into a river and the rice farmers down stream started dying. If they are Christians, they have to sneak around at night moving the prayer services from secret location to secret location. If caught they are either disappeared or placed in cruel labor concentration camps for re-education.

You want cheap labor but you don't want to see the workers heavily exploited and abused? Then stop using China. Start using a free country like the Philippines where there is plenty of labor. Want to know what the Philippines biggest export is? People! They all leave the country to work in health care, construction, household servants, etc. They all leave because there is no work at home. They all leave because most countries have an exchange rate that allows them to send money home and make it stretch. Another plus, most Filipinos speak excellent English. It was an American colony after all.

Pretty astonishing growth. There are only three or four private (quasi-private, I guess) companies that employ more than a million people: State Grid of China, China National Petroleum, Indian Rail, and the biggest, Wal-Mart (which has more than two million employees). 400,000 employees by itself would be enough to make you one of the 15 largest private employers in the world.
