Koreans swamp servers as pre-orders begin

iPhone 4 pre-orders have begun in Korea, and distributor KT Corporation (KTC) is reporting huge sales. Specifically, 130,000 orders were placed within the first 13 hours of availability. By comparison, it took 5 days to sell 65,000 units of the 3GS.

KTC reportedly had to expand their server capacity during the frenzied day as the initial surge brought service down. Customers were trying to connect from multiple locations, like work and home, in an attempt to make a successful transaction.

Pyo Hyun-myong, chief of KTC's mobile business, shared his gratitude and apologized for the downtime some customers experienced via Twitter. "I really appreciate this enormous support from our customers, and I also apologize for the discomfort caused by the ordering system. We will do our best for flawless delivery of the product."

There's no definite release date just yet, other than sometime in September. Sales-killing antenna issue? What sales-killing antenna issue?

The Rogers store nearest me in Oshawa has a waiting list I was No 32 when I went in the Tuesday after the iPhone 4 went on sale in Canada, they told me I would have 1 hour from the time they called to get in the store or they would call the next person, still haven't had a call, after almost 3 weeks. My iPhone 3G has been a royal pain since upgrading to iOS 4, so I need the new phone before I loose it and throw this one through a window.

Your going to keep waiting on that phone call but it will never happen. If you really need the iPhone 4, call every rogers close to you and ask if they have any in stock. Not just rogers but bestbuys and future shops. My friend from Whitby got a 16GB iPhone 4 at his local rogers store a week ago so if you can drive for a bit, you may get lucky.

I don't get this Apple can not supply iPhones to the countries that they are already selling in (I have had my name on a waiting list at Rogers in Canada since it came out). So how can they be taking pre orders in other countries? Did they find a magical supply no one knew about some were? Are they opening up another production line just for the new countries?

I just don't get it.

I had to wait outside the rogers store for 7 hours and another 4 hours inside the store to activate because rogers wont take iPhone 4 orders over the phone and there were hold options. What waiting list are you talking about?

They don't reserve them all for Rogers. Apple probably keeps the lion's share of Canadian-bound iPhones for themselves (to sell unlocked), and then Rogers gets some, Bell gets some, Telus gets some, etc.

I ordered mine on launch day, unlocked straight from Apple, and it shipped yesterday.
