The iPhone 4 comes to Portugal at a 'louco' price
The good news: Portugal is getting the iPhone 4 next week. On August 27, mobile provider Optimus will start selling the iPhone 4 (here's a Google-translated link for the Portuguese-impaired). The bad news: the price is going up by 70 euros, meaning Portuguese customers will pay more for the iPhone 4 than just about anybody else.I thought we had it bad in New Zealand, where we pay NZ$1299 (about US$918) for an unsubsidized 32 GB iPhone 4. But at 769.90 euros, a 32 GB iPhone 4 costs nearly NZ$100 (US$71) more in Portugal than in New Zealand, where mobile handset prices are usually among the highest in the world. The 16 GB iPhone 4, at 679.90 euros, is an even worse deal: over NZ$130 more (US$92) than the New Zealand price.
I've never been thrilled with handset prices in New Zealand, but we are kind of in the middle of nowhere, so it's almost excusable. It makes much less sense for the Portuguese to have to pay such a high premium for the iPhone 4. Optimus hasn't offered any reasons for raising the price by 70 euros, and I have to wonder how happy Apple is with the decision -- rumor has it that Vodafone's bungled launch of the iPhone 4 was precipitated by pricing disputes between the two companies, so it'll be interesting to see if something similar plays out in Portugal.

companies like FNAC.pt, Worten.pt and Vobis.pt announced unlocked iPhone 4 for $1800. Vodafone.pt and Optimus.pt are likely to soon get on this wagon. These guys are profiting more than Apple for the unlocked device. It is outrageous to change $1800 for a phone that costs less than half of this price in UK, France and other countries in europe.
You get a plane ticket from Portugal to Zurich, spend a night on a 5 star hotel, take a cab to an Apple store, buy an unlocked model and return to Portugal. You can do all this for less than it costs in Portugal.
1. I'm not under 30, so I have no idea what point you're trying to make here.
2. I live in New Zealand. I'm not here on a working holiday; I'm working toward permanent residency. That's the only reason I "name drop" it. If I wanted to sound "worldly or well-travelled" I'd talk about the other dozen countries I've visited and/or lived in.
Oh, that's nothing. In South Africa the 32gb version is about US$1650.00. yes, all the zero's are in the right places. It's not officially launched here yet but but still, it's a tab excessive.

Italy is still the most expensive country in the world: iPhone4 32GB 779⬠(but they are not SIM-locked).
Unless it is so expensive they are always sold-out in every store and people are going crazy just to get one!
Em Portugal é assim. Temos sempre elevados preços...

In Brazil it will cost nearly US$1.500. It is the price of the 3GS here. The best price you may have if you own a big account is around US$450 but you have to be loyal for 12 months.

Only problem is people there don't really make that much money.
Visit Belgium and buy an official unlocked iPhone 4 without contract!

* 32GB version = ⬠750
If you ask me it is till much too expensive. They cost almost 3x more than the iPod touch ...
Wait a few weeks (or months) because every store is out of stock. At this moment you can only buy them at Mobistar shops. URL: http://iphone.mobistar.be
A friend of mine had set her sights on the iPhone 4 - and couldn't shut up about it ;) - but switched to a white Blackberry when she found out that even after a two year contract worth 718 euros (915 dollars) she still had to pay 270 euros (344 dollars) for the phone.
Might be a good price in some parts of the world, but too much for her.
