Steve Jobs: 'Software update coming soon' for iOS 4 on iPhone 3G

One of the many beleaguered iPhone 3G owners who've been suffering through poor performance after updating to iOS 4 e-mailed Steve Jobs to ask when Apple will offer a solution. Jobs's response was brief enough for us to fit the whole thing in our headline: "Software update coming soon."

The real question here is, how soon is "soon?" Apple has been "looking into" fixing iOS 4 for iPhone 3G owners for nearly a month now. While the issues are not universal, many iPhone 3G owners have reported extreme sluggishness and crashiness that renders an iPhone 3G almost unusable after updating to iOS 4 -- and the problem's widespread enough that parody videos have been making the rounds on YouTube for months. While there have been numerous solutions offered from troubleshooters (disabling Spotlight seems to be a popular choice), these solutions haven't worked for everyone. Although there are methods to roll an iPhone 3G's firmware back to OS 3, the fact that Apple doesn't officially support these methods has kept many users from taking the plunge.

Speaking from personal experience, none of the 4.1 betas restored my iPhone 3G to a pre-iOS 4 level of performance. On the other hand, after giving my wife the iPhone 3G and setting it up as a new phone (rather than restoring from backup), she hasn't seen nearly the same level of problems I suffered through.

At the very least, the fact that Apple's CEO has acknowledged the problem at all should come as a good sign for iPhone 3G owners. Let's just hope that "soon" really does mean soon.

I installed the 4.1 update (via the GM copy from the iPhone developer site) a couple of days ago, and can confirm that it absolutely solves the 3G hardware speed issues. (Finally)

Same here. Installed 4.1 GM on my wife's iPhone 3G, and it runs smooth as silk now.

Really, where's apples motivation to do anything at all??

With the release of the iphone 4, why would they want to?

Oh, you're 3g is running slow, upgrade...

What I'd really like to know is when we will be getting ios4 for the ipad!

I had horrible performance issues with my 3G after upgrading to 4.0 and then to 4.0.1. I found a tip which worked wonders for me:

1. Turn off Spotlight Search: Go to Settings | General | Home Button | Spotlight Search, and uncheck everything
2. Reboot your iPhone 3G: Just a normal power down and restart
3. Turn Spotlight Search back on: Go back to same screen as step 1, and re-check everything you unchecked in Step 1

I've since upgraded to 4.0.2 and still haven't had any slowdowns.

You can more read about it on my blog:

The iOS4 does NOT work with the iPhone 3g, and so far, I have not been able to get AT&Tor Apple to do anything about it. I bought my iPhone 3g on contract last year, and it worked just fine, until the iOS4 came out.
That's when the trouble started! Every app, including the native apps that came pre-installed, started crashing nearly everytime I opened them. Try running an app while listening to the iPod, and the music would freeze, and lock up the phone. Get a phone call while working in another app, and the phone would freeze.
Finally, I rolled back my software, to OS 3.1.3, until I can afford to go buy the Samsung Captivate without a contract. I am switching to Android, and going off contract, because neither AT&T nor Apple has done ANYTHING to satisfactorily address this situation! If you need to do the same, you can go to my blog post about this, and follow the link to learn how to rollback your OS. oknewmediaconsulting.com/2010/08/05/ios4-sucks-on-the-iphone-3g/

I feel for 3G owners. I haven't yet upgraded my wife. But from what I've heard for over a month, the solution is setting up as a new phone. Using jailbreak tricks you can restore your text messages and get most everything else back via sync.

But seriously, let's address the lack of iOS4 on the iPad first, Steve. Your flagship mobile product from 3 mobths ago is now behind, software wise, your 2008 iPhone.

Mike they announced the iPad would get the update in fall when they introduced ios4.

I think the two teams (iPhone 4 & iPad) were isolated from each other during the development stages. But I have a feeling ios4 for iPad is going to squash the iphone 4.

I assumed (since Apple said that it was supported) that the 3G could actually run what Apple said it could (iOS4). It couldn't - at all. My phone became useless. So I sent apple support an email, which promptly got ignored. So I sent the same email to Steve Jobs - asking for an Apple approved method of rolling back to the 3.x firmware.

Instead I got a call from an Executive Customer Relations rep that asked me to generate some detailed logs over a 24 hour period. Within an hour of emailing said logs to said rep, He called and told me they needed my phone for further testing. The iPhone 4 they replaced my 3G with runs great... so I never got my rollback, but the problem is solved on my end.

Here, a month later they announce an update to fix it...

Seemingly forgotten in the discussion of the performance-degrading effects of iOS4 is the fact that it also seem to impact iPid Touches, too. Since installing iOS4 on my 2nd-generation iPod Touch, it is now buggier, slower, has experienced lock-ups, and has very inconsistent wi-fi performance. I never had these issues with the prior OS.

My 3G runs great!
All I had to do was downgrade to iOS 3.1.3
It's not at all difficult to do, and I seriously don't care at all that Apple doesn't officially support doing that.
I don't officially support Apple tossing out software updates that have such negative impacts on earlier hardware. Especially when it would be so easy for them to post a link on their website to earlier iOS's.
But whatever. If you want to really fix your phone, it's really easy: http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_downgrade_your_iphone_3g_ios_313
