Movies rented with iPhone 4 won't transfer to iTunes

iLounge is reporting this week that movies rented from the iTunes Store with an iPhone 4 cannot be transferred to iTunes for viewing on other Apple devices. Which means you can only watch that movie on the iPhone 4 used to rent it.

This has been the case with the iPad and the Apple TV. As the iTunes Store terms and conditions points out, movies rented "using the Apple TV or iPad may not be moved." So this isn't unprecedented, and it is mentioned on page 99 of Apple's iPhone User Guide for iOS 4 Software (PDF link): "On iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, you can transfer rented movies between iPhone and your computer. On iPhone 4, you can transfer rented movies between iPhone and your computer only if they were rented in iTunes on your computer. Movies rented on iPhone 4 cannot be transferred to a computer."

This must be due to a resolution issue, iLounge points out, as the iPhone 4's retina display at 960 x 640 falls short of full 720p, and barely beyond standard resolution of 854 x 480.

Ah, that really sucks. So does this mean if we want to watch the movies rent from itunes with iphone on other devices, we have to convert them? If so, I think Tune4mac iTunes Video Converter Plus can help.

It's a freaking phone....

Like the guy mentioned earlier that this doesn't affect 99.9% of all users. Just like the antenna issue that was blown up. Also, AT&T doesn't want you downloading HD movies over 3G so they have to put restrictions on it. Why do you think they changed the data plans to limited instead of unlimited before the iPhone 4 was released?WiU cannot believe that asomeone is taking shots about the iPhone 4s screen not being 720p. The phone will scale down and play 720p movies and the resolution is better than any smartphone out there right now.

If only there were a service that allowed to rent and stream movies to any of your iDevices, and they would only charge you a monthly fee, and it would be like watching flicks...on the net. Yeah, that would be great.

iPhone 4 resolution has 50% more pixels than standard definition TV. I don't think that's "barely beyond". Some people can't even do simple math.

This limit will trouble some users. Although the iPhone videos are smaller for iPad and Macs, but someone still love to watch them on other Apple devices.

Here's a better way to transfer your iPhone video to Macs. More info goes to

Forget that. I want to be able to rent a movie from my iPhone and choose to have it downloaded to my AppleTV while I get home!

Isn't this obvious? The iPhone 4 has joined the AppleTV and iPad as a device that can rent HD movies, and the studios don't want HD movies transferring between devices.

So, you can rent an HD movie on your computer, but you can't transfer it to an iPad or AppleTV. You can an HD movie on your AppleTV, but you can't transfer it to your computer. You can rent an HD movie on your iPad, but.......you get the picture. They don't want any opportunity for the media to be pirated, so no transferring.

All the people complaining about Apple's policy on this should direct their vitriol at the media companies who force Apple's hand - it's the movie studios that demand that HD rentals not be allowed to transfer between devices. Apple would be perfectly happy to let you do it.

While I don't really care to watch full length movies on my iPhone 4, it would be cool to have an app that let's you rent a movie and then your itunes on your Mac or Apple TV would receive the call and start downloading it. Much like Transmissions web app.

I had once rented/downloaded a movie through iTunes on my main home computer, expecting to watch it on my HTPC hooked up to my big screen (same iTunes account). No go. You can only watch the rental on the computer on which you downloaded the rental.

Hmm. That's odd. I don't know for sure, but I'm almost positive that I rented a movie on my wife's computer and played it back on my laptop. Sounds like it might be time to give it a try and test this.

Life must be so easy for everyone that they have nothing better to do than to bitch about Apples policies. Nobody forces anyone to purchase Apple products or use itunes or rent movies from apple. If you don't like the way Apple does business, just don't do business with them. I am sure everyone was so much happier with their rotary dial phones, their cassette walkmans and their black and white TVs.

Complaining on this forum is just annoying to those of us who don't really want to hear it.
