Found Footage: The iPad Orchestra

The iPad is gaining a solid reputation as a musician's infinite instrument, and nothing demonstrates this better than this video of The iPad Orchestra by Alex Shpil.

Four musicians, all using the Seline HD app on amplified iPads, play a piece called "Sweet Dream" composed by Ilya Plavunov. The quartet consists of cello, flute, violin, and clarinet. The result is... magical.

Thanks to Toyo for the tip!

This will be improved some day but for now...with tactile sense removed...iPad play seems less intuitive than theremin-notes are plucked out of the air. Midi keyboards are here to stay.
Feel bad for musicians forced stare at screen.

This does nothing to push the envelope. They could have done exactly the performance using far less-expensive MIDI keyboards. I was hoping to see something where they really used the unique features of the iPad to control the instrument. How about using the velocity and position sensors for slides and special effects? Maybe use the touch screen in a unique manner. For most musicians, a standard keyboard interface would have been superior for performing this music. Let's show a performance iPad music that could not have been done better on a cheaper device, and really demonstrates the strengths of the iPad!

I don't know many useful midi keyboards for under $500. Sure a kid's casio but is it a midi keyboard or a keyboard with software instruments. It's not impossible, but nor is it impossible to carry around said keyboard and stand on your back to whip out on the flight when you have an inspired moment.

I also thought it was mostly boring and not a great choice of song.

Sounds like bad early 90's synth music. ugh. Nice concept, I guess, but synth music sucks ass when its attempting to emulate real instruments. Stick to actual electronic sounds and don't try to sound like real instruments, and they can become something awesome. just.... not this.

Magical? It still sounds like wonky video game music to me, and not even the good kind.

The composition may not be particularly inspiring but the instruments and the performance sound great. If nothing else, it's a great way to experiment with different songs before recording the real thing.
