Rumor: New iPhone 4 handset at the end of September

Honestly, I don't even believe this one, but it's our responsibility as an Apple news site to keep you updated on the latest rumors, so here you go: A Mexican tech site is reporting that a Telcel executive says there will be a new version of the iPhone 4's handset released as soon as the end of September.

Marco Quatorze, Telcel's Director of Value Added Services, says that the iPhone 4 will soon go on sale in Mexico with the same hardware as everywhere else, but that as of September 30th (which is purportedly when the free case deal ends), Apple will be releasing brand new hardware for the phone that will fix the seam in the outer band that causes reception issues.

Anyone who's been paying attention to the issue knows that story's full of holes -- not only does Apple already consider the whole "Antennagate" issue solved, but it's extremely improbable that they'll update the hardware so soon and for that reason. It's much more likely that the company would just extend the free case program rather than update the hardware before the planned cycle. Plus, as we heard from Apple specificially, "Apple has not made an announcement regarding iPhone 4 pricing or availability in Mexico." Let's get the phone on sale before we start talking about updates.*

It's possible that this is just an error in translation. If you want to get a little paranoid, we might even guess that Mr. Quatorze is trying to keep Mexican customers from buying another cellphone, hinting that there are better phones coming just around the corner. Either way, we're only posting this rumor here for due diligence -- it's extremely unlikely we'll see a new iPhone 4 in just over a month.

*As noted in the comments here, on the iPhone 4 Mexico post and on Apple's own site, the iPhone 4 is available in Mexico, but Apple has yet to provide us with an actual statement to that effect.

I think Apple, and esp. Steve were shaken by Antennagate. Apple likes to "make things right", and they may attempt to do that today.

Perhaps a fix on the antenna issue has been worked out, and will be released today as the iPhone 4.x

If it could be tweaked without modifying the architecture of the device I can't see why Apple would hold back.

Anyhow I am sure that there will be (thankfully) no GOOFY YOUTUBE VIDEO to start this event. If there is I will eat my 1G iPod nano.

Ok, I checked what the Telcel executive said and yes, he did said that Apple was "working in the new model and should be available by the end of September" So, it's not an error in translation nor was made up by the Mexican news site. He was being questioned about the Antennagate when he said so, so it's possible he was just making things up.

"hinting that there are better phones coming just around the corner."

Android has almost no presence here in Mexico, so, really there isn't any better phone around the corner.

@Mike - to feed your paranoia, maybe apple has to fulfill a contract with the manufacturing company to not discontinue work until a certain point in the year. for instance, they might have a contract with foxconn or whoever, to build 10 million specific units until september. if they stop production and wait for a solution, then apple loses money because they can't sell iPhones and they are paying the manufacturer to sit around and do nothing. it might be cheaper just to offer a free case until then.

but i don't believe any of this story.

I'm not sure about this rumor, but I would love to see this idea I found about the iPhone. Check it out: http://bit.ly/bGh4GX Basically having two phones on one device like one for work and one for personal use?

Not really. Not if they offer a free replacement. I think I'll wait until 4.1 is out and jailbroken first. Mine is Jailbroken, and I'm sure the replacements will have 4.02 on them which is not jail breakable at this time.

I don't see why this seems so impossible to everyone.

1. "It's too soon"
Too soon to fix a problem? No such thing. They have to be downright Machiavellian about this and fix it yesterday.

2. "It would cost Apple too much" (either in dollars if they replace all phones, or in PR if they don't)
Nobody said it had to be a complete re-design of the phone. If the fix is simple enough, it could be an inexpensive fix, and replacing even all existing phones could be feasible. As an example, if moving the band that's causing all these problems would fix the problem, re-tooling to manufacture the "new" design would be minimal, and Apple could offer anyone to walk into the Apple store and swap out there phone for a new one at no charge (for anyone who purchased for the last 30 days) or a nominal fee (if you purchased before that, or the phone is not in resell condition). They could then refurbish all the returned phones on the spot (in the Apple retail store) for virtually nothing and send the outer band of the old design out to be recycled.

I'm not saying this Mexican dude is right. In fact, if he is, it's only on a hunch or guess, not because he has inside info. I'm just saying that Apple is the last company to discount on doing something bold and innovative.

Apple is in a bad spot.

If they make any adjustment to the iPhone 4, they'll HAVE TO fix the antenna issue -- otherwise there'll be a sh*tstorm. But if they make adjustments that are too "big", it won't pass as a minor rev., then Steve will look bad and they'll have a million pissed off early iPhone 4 purchasers.

Ugh.
