New iTunes features Ping social media network

Steve Jobs announced iTunes 10 today, complete with a new logo. The core interface does not receive much tweaking, however in the list view there is a hybrid view where if you have more than 5 songs from the same album, it will show you the album artwork.

Most of the new release's focus is on Ping, a social network for music. "It's like Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes," Jobs said. Jobs is right; it looks almost, but not quite Facebook. It's much like that service where you can follow friends, have a circle of friends and share what music you're listening to through the network. When following an artist, you can be alerted to their concert listings.

Ping will be available for 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries right off the bat. It will also be available in the iTunes Store on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

iTunes 10 will be available for download today.

Amplified.FM will be the future of music organization, promotion, and distribution. Give it a few years!

Man wat i was hoping they add in this new update a way to download songs from different countries. Im a big anime fan and i would love to download some Japanese songs but since its Yen itunes doesn't let me download. They should set something up where u can download the song and it converts the money issue and pay the amount it would be.

I totally feel your pain. I'd love to download all the Utada Hikaru videos and then try out some new artists, but it's such a pain to even log into the Japanese store to look at what they have, let alone to buy.

I've never bought anything from the Japanese store, but as far as I know, the only way to do it without a Japanese credit card is to buy Japanese iTunes cards from sites like JBox. It's good there's a workaround, but it sucks it's such a pain to do.

Just downloaded the new v10 and thought why did I even bother. They took away the automatic sync feature of PDFs in your podcasts, the Ping feature is such a bore, and who wants a Facebook wannabe? Facebook is only good for Farmville.

Now I have to figure out how to get my PDFs back into my phone.

BTW, if it was profitable for me I'd start selling Japanese iTunes cards to anyone who wanted them.

Anyone know why the download isn't ready yet? Do you think it wasn't quite ready for primetime, or is it just an upload gaffe?

Will Ping be an option in preferences? I don't want to share anything, or have anyone know what I'm doing! Nor do I care what anyone else is listening to...

I'm positive that you can opt out of it if you want (it may require you to opt in in the first place.)

iTunes 10 comes out and everyone's talking about the lame social feature??? What about the expectations for a totally revamped program? Something substantial, something worthy of the 'X' moniker... I use iTunes daily, it's the best available for what it does, but it could be so much more!

I was so sure the move from 9.x to 10.x was going to be the time. Sad that we're getting 'iTunes 10' and not 'iTunes X'.

Will iTunes finally be 64-bit?

This. This is why I couldn't grind my face into my palm hard enough to express the facepalm in my heart. Apple has done absolutely nothing but pile a couple of (IMO) crap features and an icon so hideous it's going to give me nightmares onto a decade-old junkpile. What is this, an Adobe product? God, and this was their big chance to make a good impression with it, too, with the spiritual tie-in to OS X and QuickTime X (well, OK, it was QuickTime 8, but it was still a rewrite).

It doesn't really matter if Last.fm does it better. I love last.fm but I don't have very many friends on it. Do you know how many friends I have that use iTunes? It's pretty much like facebook places vs foursquare except that Ping will get even more use, just like everything else that Apple reinvents

I keep seeing a link being posted through the Twitterverse. TUAW, can you confirm? It's an iTunesX.pkg file wrapped up in a tar file with an address coming from Apple's servers. Care to confirm?

Yeah, it's iTunes 9.2.1. Don't bother.
