In Brief: Canadian App Store allows gift card purchases

Drop that curling broom and get downloading! Reader Jacques writes in to let us know that the Canadian edition of the App Store has begun accepting iTunes gift cards as payment for app purchases, a policy change that seems to have quietly taken effect back in June of this year.

You may recall (or maybe not) that Canada's iPhone-toting population was previously shut out of using gift cards for apps, although the reasons why aren't entirely clear.

Congratulations, Canada, and enjoy.

fail, I just bought an "app" card at 7-11.
10% off, so i thought i would give it a try.
15.00 credit shows on the top right of itunes, but it is greyed out and every app i have tried to buy keeps trying to use my credit card.
This was labelled an "app" card not "itunes", that is why I bought it thinking problem was resolved, still waiting for Apple to get back to me.
Had a look at "itunes card and it clearly states you can not buy apps.
i dont use music, screwed again, paid too much for a crippled phone by rogers and apple and now maybe blatant theft, but i will wait to see what apple says about this.

Yup! It's been available since May-ish (http://su.pr/2PhQeT). Took Apple Long enough!

Sweet. I had just pre-ordered my new 4G iPod Touch on Sunday night. I've been worrying about what to do to purchase apps and stuff. I heard that those vanilla mastercards make it so that when you run out of money on them, you can't even download free apps.

Now I don't have to worry :)

Started about 6 months ago... but took Apple long enough... that credit was sitting on my account for about a year waiting for this to happen.

As with Acro Mace, I myself have been using Gift Cards for Apps since February.. I did alert a few sites online to this mysterious ability, but no one caught on until now... I even sent one e-mail to TUAW.... in Feb.

I don't know what the big deal is. I was able to make app purchases on a gift card through the Canadian store way back in May!!

I've been able to purchase apps with gift cards for about half a year in British Columbia, I'm guessing it wasn't available in other provinces?

It's about frickin' time!! The sole reason I kept a US iTunes account, other than getting season 7 of Futurama since it hasn't aired here yet, was for the apps.

This has been available since the HST came into effect. I was explained that it was an issue that the taxes were not uniform within Canada. Now that they are, it's no longer an issue.

Taxes are still not uniform in Canada.
HST came into effect in BC and Ontario on July 1st, but other provinces either had HST before, or do it differently.
