Ping reaches a million, attacked by spam

Apple's new social network, Ping, has been around for about a week now, and all of the pundits have had their chance at weighing in on what Apple got wrong and right. And what's the result? Not bad, but not great -- more than a million people joined the network in just 48 hours. That's not terrible at all, but it's a far cry from the millions of people who actually use iTunes, presumably every day. Apple's success in this area, in other words, isn't going to come easy.

The company has already had to put in a little more work. In addition to all of those members, the network was also hit by spam early on, with fake accounts for people like Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive, plus links that led off to contact-stealing scripts and other trouble like that. Apple has already cracked down on most of the offenders, but clearly it was an issue early on that they didn't foresee.

The interface has already been updated a bit -- Apple has added "back" and "forward" buttons to the service, to match the rest of the in-app browsers in iTunes. I still maintain that Ping won't reach its full potential until you can actually "like" songs and albums in your personal library, so hopefully a few more updates and tweaks are on the way.

Looks like TUAW is having its own spamming problem.

In any case, the Ping spam thing is being blown way out of proportion. If you're getting spam, just stop following the spammer. Ping is all opt-in, so there's no real "spam", just fake accounts.

Always had my music arranged in folders with loosely defined genre categories having name of band + name of album inside so I never used any library software and iTunes is used only for iphone syncing. I did upgrade to 10 though (nothing to lose) and boy was ping nothing to write home about. It's so middle of the road and promotes what every major label does in paid playlists that it's not useful to anyone that might actually want to search for new bands/styles. All the recommendations were revolving around the same hyped up so-hot-right-now numbers and it seems like it was all made up in a rush to ship without anything to make it stand out. And with 120 million iOS devices of which 45 million are iPods, I'd expect a lot more subscribers on day one.

You can like songs in your library by:

1. Clicking the arrow right next to the song in your Music library (in list view)
2. Once you go to it in iTunes (it's now highlighted) click the down arrow, near Buy, and click Like

You can also Post a song to your Ping profile the same way.

An extra step..for now..but works great.

Not everyone upgrades immediately.

I prefer to wait til at least .03 or .04 on any software.

nothing installs itself. You must have approved software updates you didn't look at. Bad idea in general.

UK has it! It's "Artists we recommend" feature is worthless...

I wish Apple could use Last.fm. And Spotify. And Facebook.
