The extra safe, extra cautious iOS 4.1 upgrade guide

In case you missed it, the highly anticipated iOS 4.1 software update was released yesterday. If you've already upgraded, or after reading that sentence you're not already downloading it now, then you obviously like to play it cool and safe. Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. Good for you! Either that, or you got seriously burnt last time.

Well, when you're good and ready, Mac Observer has just the guide for you. It's so extensive, it practically holds your hand when taking your first steps to the land of iOS 4.1. From considering whether you should upgrade or not, to making sure your 'must have' apps are compatible and backed up for the new update, the walk through will guide you every step of the way, without making you run before you can walk!

Seriously though, if you can't afford any mishaps, it's well worth the read. The walk through will even guide you on resetting your iTunes warnings so that the ones you nonchalantly clicked through last time will trigger again. Just make sure you read them this time, OK?

Have you upgraded your iOS device to software version 4.1? Have you hit any snags along the way? Let us know how you're doing in the comments.

i upgraded my ipod toucg 2nd generation, to a 4.1 and lost the ability to add a wallpaper to backround, multi-task, and the battery percentage without jailbreaking, i did it twice, restore it and everything, and nothing is there, am i doing anything wrong, or is this 4.1 upgrade really a downgrade?

I updated my iPhone 3G to the new iOS4. It told me I should back up my phone before starting the update. So I did...twice. The update went fine. It only took an hour which I expected. When it was finished I went to go look at my phone and everything was gone. No music, no apps, no contacts, no notes, no MLB preferences or Bloomberg stocks. Please don’t tell me I’ve lost everything. I’ve been building my contact records for over two years of all business and personal names, addresses, etc. And I’ve tossed all my hard copies. UUUrrrggghhh.

I just slid Game Center over to the Last page. But quite frankly, I would rather not give up the drive space for it.

Upgraded my iPod Touch 2nd Gen to the new
OS last night. As a result:
1. Many if the photo thumbnails in my 'Saved Photos' album have disappeared, replaced by a large black area at the bottom of the thumbnails screen. Interestingly enough, I can tap in the blacked-out area and the photo that'should be there appears.
2. I use Calendar in lust view. When I now open Calendar, I get a blank screen. When I select another view, it opens normally. Then selecting the lust view causes it to show properly.

And fat fumble fingers twice typed 'lust' instead of 'list.'

sip, thanks for the upgrade tip. i'll try it next time.

i am nobody but myself--and i'm a guy at that.

exchanged my 16gb for a 32gb today--the local at&t store actually had a stock of them come in early today. so far so good but i keep looking for the snake around the corner.

I haven't updated my iPhone, but did update an iPod. Connected iPod to the Mac, opened iTunes, selected the iPod and went through all the tabs to take screen shots of Music, Movies, Apps. Then I deleted all previous Backups for the iPod (iTunes/Preferences/Devices) and forced a new Backup.

Forced an update in Recovery mode, then set up the iPod as a new device -- did not Restore from Backup. Forced restart (Power+Home buttons, ignore the Power off slider until the Apple appeared on-screen)

Then went through all the screenshots and selected Apps, Music & Movies to be sync'd and let iTunes work away.

Works well -- feels like a new device.

Only weird thing in my upgrade was suddenly receiving 6 voicemails that I should have received over the last 2 days... glad to have them> wonder if this is an ATT issue? or what.

For both previous IOS 4 updates on my iPhone 4 I needed RecBoot to get the thing working. This one worked straight off with no issues. Pleased indeed.

and one more thing: when i went about the restore last night i was presented with 2 choices either restore from "iPhone" or "iPhone". of course, the one i chose was the older one (it was the one on top). i had a great deal of fun trying to restore all my apps just the way i wanted them--seeing as how the screenshots i took of all my pages were apparently in the "other" choice labeled "iPhone".

really, really nice going, apple.

you're lucky we love you--we just don't like you very much right now.

One thing you should always do before an update is delete all previous Backups -- iTunes/Preferences/Devices then force a new Backup (right click on your phone and select backup) only as a fall-back in case something goes wrong.

Once updated, set up your phone as a new device and give it a nice name, something like Kate's iPhone -- turn the phone OFF and restart.

Re-install all your music, videos & apps.

Avoids a whole load of hassle -- I've been doing this since the original iPhone and manage over 20 iPhones, iPads & iPods and I've never had any problems.
