Work on iOS 4.1 jailbreak continues

With iOS 4.1 still warm from its journey through the tubes, the jailbreaking community is already working its way inside. Chronic Dev Team member pod2g has discovered yet another bootrom-based exploit that would supposedly work across all iOS devices running the latest firmware. That means that the iPhone 4 and the shiny, new iPod touch are on the list.

The jailbreak isn't yet widely available, but with confirmations of initial success in less that 24 hours, it shouldn't be long before this jailbreak is available to the masses. Redmond Pie notes that patching this exploit will require a revised hardware version with updated bootroms for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and the iPod touches from Apple. In other words, a firmware update won't be adequate.

We'll let you know when the jail has actually been broken.

I have been patiently waiting for this. The only thing that concerns me is this Apple anti-jailbreaking patent. I must have had my head in the gutter or something but this is the first I have heard of it. Is this really a concern or just a scare tactic? I do not use any pirated software or anything like that. I really only jailbroke for the tethering feature. I did pay for the mify app in case anyone is wondering:) I just feel strongly that if you tether it should come out of your iphone data package. Charging an extra $40 is ludicrous. I refuse to pay $70 just for data, that's actually more than I am actually paying for my phone plan itself.

Sorry I just noticed that in the middle of my rant, I made a false statement. I meant to say that the data used for tethering should not come out of the iphone data plan. But anyway all I really am concerned about is this patent. I mean, I don't know how something like this can pass. It almost doesn't even seem legal for them to just out of nowhere brick your phone. If this is actually the case and this really is something that is possible, I won't take a chance with jailbreaking again and just find another way to get connected on business trips.

I have an iPhone 3G that I jailbroke using Redsn0w a few months ago. Works great, love the multi-tasking. Yeah, it's kinda slow but not to the point that it's a misery to use. So, since an iOS 4.1 jailbreak is forthcoming, what specific steps would I need to take to upgrade to 4.1? Would I have to first return my iPhone to it's pre-jailbroken state, and then re-jailbreak using 4.1? Or would I just "overwrite" the existing jailbreak with the forthcoming new one? Sorry if this is a "duh" question. Thanks for helpful replies.

With the redsn0w tool you would update your 3g as you normally would through itunes. Then you would run the updated redsn0w to re-jailbreak.

Thanks, Mars. So, if I understand correctly, I would not have to first "undo" the previous jailbreak before using iTunes? In other words, I would connect the jailbroken iPhone to iTunes and update - which would "erase" the previous jailbreak? Then......run the updated redsn0w?

Unlocking will take longer. Apple saw the last exploit and very likely patched it. Fortunately, the dev_team said they had found 2 unlock methods and only released one so Apple would patch it first

It's interesting that, until the recent Jailbreak.me userland jailbreak, all jailbreaking in the past couple of years has been via a bootrom exploit, using tools such as pwnagetool and redsn0w. That is, unpatchable without hardware change (changes that Apple made with the iPod Touch 3G and later iPhone 3GS versions). Yet, every blog is making a big deal now about how this latest exploit can't be patched without a hardware change as if it's a new concept. It's only new compared with the previous jailbreak, which was a rare exception.

yes, it will work with a 3G. But since they're no longer in production, it's highly unlikely that apple would release revised hardware to prevent the bootrom jailbreak on outdated hardware.

Uh, it's 100% freaking unlikely that Apple would reintroduce the iPhone 3G just to update the freaking bootrom on it.

Hello???????????????

Does this mean it would or wouldn't work with a 3G?
