Rumor: iPad to hit Target in October

This is hardly definitive proof, but it's still interesting. A tipster has sent Engadget some snapshots suggesting that a new electronic device will hit Target shelves (Target is a department store in the US) on October.

The mystery item (its name is hidden) comes is six variations, with item numbers that match the iPad price points exactly. Additionally, screenshots from a Target PDA have the item placed in the store's Digitial Audio section, which is where the Kindle and iPods are sold.

Could it be the iPad? It's possible, but these weak images won't let us say definitively. We'll find out on October 3rd, the day it's supposed to go down.

"Comet, Currys, PC World, John Lewis"...

Never heard of any of these. For those who don't have an Apple store nearby, or any of those obviously-less-than-ubiquitous stores, this is good news as it will allow them to get a hands-on experience with the iPad.

Oh yes I'm so convinced. *rolls eyes*
Even our court system requires more proof than this, unless you're in California.

If anyone goes to target today they should look up the 057-10-1731 number on the price scanner. you can type the number in and push enter and it will tell you what the item is in their system.

Call me crazy, but Apple's pricing on iPads is $XXX.00, not $XXX.99. So the cheapest model should be $499.00, not $499.99.

True, but stores like Best Buy always use prices that end in 0.99, so a $29 Apple accessory will be $29.99.

Isn't the iPhone at Wal-Mart $97 ?

Nowhere else has that "special" price either.
