Apple profiles iPads used in big business
Apple has published profiles of four large businesses that use iPads in their daily functioning. The first, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, explains how their staff has replaced older tools with the iPad. "I don't carry a calculator. I used to subscribe to all the journals: the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times. That's all disappeared. It's all on iPad."Additionally, guests who check into Hyatt's Andaz brand hotels are greeted with iPad-wielding staff who let them swipe a credit card, check in, and receive a card key that was encoded by the iPad itself. Since the iPad is so portable, there's no need for guests to stand in line at the desk.
Also featured is RehabCare, a St. Louis-based medical rehab facility. They've eliminated a lot of paper from their process by introducing the iPad, using it to enter patient data, track records, and more.
There are two other businesses featured, and each has an accompanying overview video. It's good to see Apple pushing the iPad to the enterprise market.

Does Apple know the secret that cigarette manufacturers knew; If you hook a client under the age of 18 you have a higher chance of capturing them for life? http://bit.ly/bGqgcC

Back on topic indeed - your rant is about queuing in a hotel or a store, and not about iPads used in big business - pffft!
Now, to really get back on topic: though I'm not yet a proud iPad owner (resolved never to be an early adopter, choosing to wait for the 2nd or 3rd iteration), the iPhone productivity apps that I use quite frequently, which are also available for the iPad, illustrate the potential of the business and administrative uses of the iDevices and give the lie to the "consumption device" bunkum that is often trotted out by techno-bloggers who definitely know better but have mortgaged their consciences to irrational agendas.
With Mocha VNC for example, I can log onto my home PC (XP WMC with video capture card) with my 3G, turn on a media server (like Orb or Windows Media Centre) and also activate my satellite digi-box (Sky TV set-top box some may call it) and do one of several things - record a program on WMC (Stargate Universe, Caprica etc) for later viewing, or I can stream the digi-box output via Orb to my 3GS (running Orb Live) while using the 3G as a digi-box channel changer. I can also stream my webcam, stored video and music via Orb. And all this over 3G and Wi-Fi (much much slower over Edge, though).
An IT administrator could extend this functionality to activate and troubleshoot multiple servers or users (see http://www.adhelpdesk.com/) and pretty much do any remote access tasks and functions. An iPad would even afford more screen space to add more functionality than an iPhone or iPod Touch could handle owing to the cramped screen space.
And that's just scratching the surface of the possibilities, without even jail-breaking the iDevice...

Back on topic with the topic; This would infuriate me, if I went into a Hyatt and there was no queue for checking in at busy times. I know I'm British, but there's a reason queues exist. I recently received my iPad as a gift and went to my local Apple store to buy some accessories. It was busy, and as there was no queue to be served, I had to stand around with other customers waiting almost 30 minutes to be served. I almost put my goods down and walked out, but there was nowhere else I could get what I wanted.
I even asked a guy at the back of the store, who was really unhelpful and said "oh, just grab a member of staff in a blue shirt and they'll help you". They won't. They're busy with all the other customers. Can I queue to pay for my goods? No. The problem with no queuing is how unfairly it deals with people who are waiting. What happened in the Apple store (and will be happening in the Hyatts) is that someone on the other side of the room will become available, and the nearest person will grab them. Useless!
There's an iPad in this picture?

I love the direction this will push app developers... I don't consume much media outside of music and I don't dedicate much time to games, but I love some of the productivity apps and mobile-workplace stuff. I'm glad it's being adopted by the business world.

Also interesting that Apple would choose to profile the dentist who makes such heavy use of a stylus with [the] iPad. Remember "If you see a stylus, they blew it"?
(All of this from a happy iPad owner...)
Why is bad to use a stylus with an iPad? They use it for drawing accurate illustrations. It just shows how versatile it is.
