Einstein Newton emulator running on iPhone
This makes my green heart happy. Above is a video of the Einstein Newton emulator running on an iPhone 4. Newton OS lives! ... Well, sort of.
You'll notice that it's kind of slow for now, though the project's developers say speed will improve. Still, it's a full Newton, with hand writing recognition and everything. They also intend to get it working on the iPod touch and iPad. If you want to get your hands on things right now, the source code is available here. Developer Matthias Melcher says he's going to submit the emulator to the App Store, but he's not holding his breath.
Congratulations to Matthias for the successful port, Paul Guyot for writing the emulator in the first place (and keeping it open source), and everyone who contributed to the project. I hope to have this on my own iPhone 4 soon.

I got this going on my MacBook Pro and it works really well--a lot faster than my original Newton. Nicely done. I think this would be a hoot on my iPhone 4 with one of those styluses that mimic a fingertip. This might be worth jail breaking an iOS device if Apple doesn't allow it in the App Store. I have a hard time imagining Apple would allow this on the Apps Store given you have to provide a legitimately acquired ROM image.

For other Apple nostalgia, you might want to look at mini vmac, an emulator for early 680x0 macintosh systems. (Requires jailbreak and access to a macintosh rom file...)
It's not all that practical, but it is interesting. It could potentially be made more mac-like with BTStack keyboard and mouse driver support though...
I haven't tried it on the iPhone myself, but I did find it very useable on a Sharp Zaurus several years ago.
YEAAAAAAAH!!!!
*cough*
Man I loved my Newton.
Hopefully they can get this working on a 3G!

I've owned a 2100 and an eMate. While they were mildly fun to play with, The Newton OS is dead for a reason. In spite of proponents arguing that it's still a great device, it's been largely surpassed by other devices and OS. Not just in computing power, or features, but very structure that Newton uses.
It should probably be iNstein ;)
Newton wasn't killed by Apple for business reasons. It was generating revenue, and had been on a slow but promising upward curve since the advent of Newton OS 2 and the MessagePad 2000. Developers were getting rapidly on board, as were third-party accessory makers.
It's true that lots of Apple products wisely got the axe when Steve came back; a whole lot of service, hardware, and software products that cost far more money than they generated. But Newton doesn't fall into that category. It was popular and profitable. Its death was personal... Steve just really hated it. The fact that it was John Sculley's baby probably didn't help.
Finally, the iPad will have handwriting recognition! (And an OS that actually makes sense for a mobile devide.)
September 24 2010 at 12:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is a great first step, but they need to get it running on an iPhone 3GS, because that's the model I have and, more importantly, the iPhone 3GS has the exact same screen resolution as the Newton MessagePad 2x00.
