Final Fantasy Tactics for iPhone delayed, Square Enix offers no explanation
In late June at E3, Square Enix tantalized fans of Final Fantasy Tactics by revealing that the game would be brought to the iPhone. The company even announced a release date for the game: September 15th. But September 15th has come and gone now without a release for this highly-anticipated title, ... and Square Enix's response to the delay is highly unsatisfactory.
I played the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the PlayStation, and it's one of my all-time favorite games. I didn't play the remake on the PSP because I never really felt compelled to buy Sony's handheld. However, I was excited enough about FFT coming to the iPhone that I set up an iCal reminder to check the App Store today for the game. It hasn't shown up, though, and it's not going to for the foreseeable future. Only two days before the game's supposed release date, Square Enix posted on its Facebook page:
"We are so sorry for confusing you. The wrong information about the FFT release date is spreading around somehow... It says the release date is to be September 15th but it's completely wrong. The release date is still 'TBD'."
I don't mind so much that the release date slipped; it happens all the time in the gaming industry, and honestly I was half expecting Final Fantasy Tactics to be delayed. But Square Enix's response to the delay is pretty classless. Not only did the company try to sweep the delay under the rug by only announcing it on its Facebook page and nowhere else, its claim that the wrong information about the release date is spreading around "somehow" is a complete fabrication -- that release date info came from Square Enix itself at E3.
If a company has to delay the release date on one of its games for some reason, that's fine -- as long as they can at least man up and admit that's what happening. A company shouldn't resort to "poor little us, wrong info got spread 'somehow' " tactics, especially not two days before such a highly-anticipated title's supposed release date. If the info really was wrong, Square Enix had more than two months to set us straight. Instead, this last-minute and all-but-unannounced delay, as well as the company's unwillingness to accept responsibility and call it a "delay," has only made the situation even more disappointing.

Yeah I was looking forward to 9/15 for months. I was a bummer when I found out that the date was just a rumor or something, a rumor that square new about but never corrected., I WANT MY FFT!

I tried installing the game on my iPod touch back in the day, didn't turn out so well:

Sure it'll be better with the official version... definitely ready to give that game another go. Just had to wait a while.
I wouldn't get too upset, the PSP version isn't regarded so highly, and I doubt that this will be more than a simple port.

Has anyone heard anything about Secret of Mana? At E3 Square also showed the teaser that that was coming to the iPhone as well. They didn't give any date for it like they did for FFT, but I haven't heard a single thing about it since E3.
Hopefully they will give a little more information today or tomorrow at TGS.
Meh. Boycott Square Enix, since profit for them means money leaving the US. :3 Square Enix, Inc.'s parent company, Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. is located overseas.

September 16 2010 at 8:01 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyA white version? That is probably one of the stupidest things I've heard today.
If they're releasing a version of the game for "white" audiences, then they also need to release a general "Western" version as well, or perhaps a version for Asians in the West, Latinos, Blacks...etc. Remember, West != White.
He doesn't mean white version of the game as in white PEOPLE.
The running joke at Apple's expense is the fact that they originally announced both a black and white iPhone, and never gave any indication that they weren't going to both be available on launch day.
Cut to launch day, no white phone, no word why.
Then they announce at the "antennagate" press conference that it'll ship by the end of July... and then just as that comes, there's nothing.
A press release (correct me if I'm wrong) is what let people know that, now, "before the end of the year" is the release date for the white iPhone.
But that's no better than saying TBD, basically.
I've been waiting a long time for FF:T to come out on the iPhone, ever since Square Enix gave us Song Summoner on the 5th generation iPod. I'm surprised it's taken so long.
At least I still have my FF:TA 1 and 2 on the GBA/DS.
BTW... has anyone seen anything on that Xbox 360 version of Front Mission yet? I heard it was due to launch pretty soon...
Not sure how much this plays into the delay, but Square Enix is releasing their new MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, next week.
I've been keeping up with FFXIV and from what I gather, it's been pretty rushed to hit its release date, so maybe SE had to pull all of their resources together just to get the MMO out the door.
This is the first game that I was truly excited about seeing on the iPhone. So much so that I'd pony up $20 if they asked it...
