PlayOn now available for iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G

Good news for all PlayOn users who own an iPad. Engadget is reporting that as of this week, joining the iPhone and iPod touch, PlayOn has released a much anticipated software update allowing you to stream content to your iPad, too.

With the power of Safari and HTML5, you can now watch streaming content from such providers as Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central, ABC, CBS, MTV and ESPN3 (and many more) over Wi-Fi and 3G by visiting PlayOn's web based app.

To harness the streaming power of PlayOn you need a running version of Windows (to get it setup) as well as a subscription to PlayOn's Premium service. If you haven't used PlayOn before, or you're not sure it's what you're looking for, PlayOn offers a free 14 day trial so you can try before you buy.

Why this much to access services you've already paid to access and other services that are already free? $40 the first year or $80 lifetime? Are they on crack?

I hate how they charge you for things that are free, like hulu does, they charge you to use the app to access content that's free on their site then show you commercials too.

Everyone brings up netflix, but two things are different, netflix doesnt show me ads and they send me discs in the mail too.

not going to buy a subscription just to get some software. this seems to be the model everyone is going after but I don't need these things that bad. Charge me for the software but going to soaked every month for software that seldom changes.

"not going to buy a subscription just to get some software"

..what's the point of having software if you don't subscribe to content?

besides this is a WEB app. the Windows part is the server or client.. sounds like you need to keep a machine around to run it?

Users simply need to install the latest version of the PlayOn client on their Windows PC, then log into http://m.playon.tv on their iPhone while connected to their home network. The mobile app then searches the user’s local network for PlayOn servers, and upon discovery, it grants full access to Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central, Revision3, and other PlayOn content channels. Eventually, users will be able to log onto their PlayOn servers from anywhere by using their WAN (wide area network) IP address.

PlayOn costs $39.99 for the first year, and $19.99 every year thereafter. Alternatively, users can make a one-time payment of $79.99. After installing the client, users can access content via game consoles like the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii, as well as through computers and other devices compatible with the DLNA streaming media standard.

Not available on the Mac. Windows only. According to their site: "Although the porting effort to Mac and/or Linux is fairly huge, we would love to add the support, but it is not planned any time soon. "

I'm not planning on supporting them either any time soon.
