iPhone launch in China gets official date of 9/25

In a Sunday press release, Apple announced an on-sale date for the iPhone 4 in China. Saturday, September 25, 8 am is when customers in the world's largest market can get their hands on the new phones; both the Apple Store Hong Kong Plaza in Shanghai and the Apple Store Xidan Joy City in Beijing will be carrying them, coinciding with the opening of the Bejing store.

China Unicom (the phone's domestic carrier) will also be selling them in retail stores. Just as in other countries, new purchases via China Unicom will require a two year service contract; however, the phone will also be available contract-free at the Apple stores.

Suggested retail price for the phone is CNY4,999 (around $744) for the 16GB model and 5,999 yen (about $893) for the 32GB model (contract-free pricing; China Unicom pricing includes service plan prepayments, and it's available here). China Unicom has been accepting pre-orders for a few days now.

I'm pretty sure that its not going to be sold at the "Apple" Store in HK Plaza, given that:

1) Apple doesn't have a store there
2) The only Apple store in Shanghai is at the IFC building in Pudong.
(Which only opened 2 months ago).

They're already available in Shanghai, and have been for months, although pricing has been outrageous. I know of people that bought and paid 12k RMB for them..

China isn't poor anymore, especially in the cities.

Ah, that will teach me not to read the press release.

These are 2 *brand new* stores that will be opening on the 25th September, in conjunction with the official iPhone release in China.

Perhaps you should update the post to indicate that perhaps?

Glad to see there's at least one 8 involved in the iPhone 4 launch in China. 8 is their culture's lucky number (because it sounds like an auspicious word in the various Chinese dialects) . Unfortunately the number 4 isn't so lucky...

hey TUAW, there's one huge god forsaken country called india, which always gets iphones like one version late.. recently we had the iphone 3gs release here. :/ But we have a hell lot of folks who live and die with every new apple product launch and TUAW after-thoughts, regardless of whether it reaches the indian shores or not.

Apple's made it a habit to ignore us. But since you cover apple sales in china so extensively, we'd be delighted to see some indian news showing up on TUAW. Yeah, we don't have those production units or the huge market that china has, but a little help from your side could probably keep numerous indian tech enthusiasts (read apple die hards) from migrating to the technologically advanced countries for these reasons ;)

This article is another example of the major differences between professional journalists and professional bloggers.

A professional journalist would give the US dollar equivalents of the Chinese prices in the article.

A professional blogger wouldn't bother.

Professional journalists don't work Sunday nights and have to get a post up in a hurry before a live podcast, but thanks for chiming in.

Currency conversions now linked and in the post.

It strikes me that a chinese worker would pay 3X their monthly wage for the phone they just made.
