VLC for iPad hits the store

Just like that, the multi-format video playback app VLC has now made it to the App Store in the form of VLC Media Player for iPad. As Chris reported a couple of weeks ago, the much-beloved open source media tool has been ported and is now available for free download.

We're grabbing our copy right now and will soon be putting it through its versatile paces.

Thanks Bart!

Pretty terrible start so far, this is a port not done by videolan.org btw.
Apple let it in the app store in this state intentially.
Vlc on the mac is great, this blows.
Air video for the stuff iTunes don't have and iTunes for everything else.
This app is crap.

been playing with it for the past hour or so...i notice that when i sync AVI (DivX) encoded movies, some take a *long* time to upload...i.e. "The Hangover" just finished uploading to the iPad in just over 25 minutes...which makes me think: "could it be that the app does a conversion on the fly for certain codecs?"

the playback quality is noticeably more pixely than what the same file looks like on my MacBook Pro, where i synced it from.

definitely needs work, but i've been a fan of the VLC project for so long, that i really am looking forward to this app maturing...

go VLC!!!

I'm quite honestly flabbergasted that someone at Apple let VLC slip through the review process — it's hardly like them, considering their stance on third-party media players and browsers thus far.

Don't be stupid. Just highlight the file in under Apps > VLC Documents in iTunes and press Shift + Backspace. This will ask you if you want to remove the item from the iPad.

Ted, he said those files he uploaded arent showing up in the iTunes windows. Sounds like he uploaded a file other than an .avi (example: wmv), which don't show up. Unless he has jailbroken iPad that has access to the filesystem, deleting VLC app is the only way to remove those files.

Delete the VLC app then re-add it to your iPad and sync. Should delete the videos

I tried each file individually:
2 avi's -crashed
1 mkv - crashed
2 mp4 - crashed (work great through regular iPod app)
2 wmv - crashed

total fail for me. I don't think it's quite finished cooking.

That said, THIS APP IS GONNA ROCK!

It crashed on the first play of a video for me too. But then I opened the same video and it played fine.

Very wierd.

Tried two torrent .avi files...death at a funneral and prince of Persia...both play fine out of vuze as well as the files ported to h264 iTunes.

VLC plays both videos avi files with background music tracks but no audio track for character dialog. Both avi files did the same thing.

I'll wait for the fix be ore trying this again.
