Kindle ad goes on the offensive against the iPad

Amazon's taken a leaf out of Apple's advertising book (Mac vs PC, anyone?) by going head to head with the iPad maker in the most recent Kindle television ad. Most noticeably, the spot delivers a low blow to the iPad's comparatively poor screen visibility in direct sunlight. As far as ads go it's rather ingenious, taking some of the best tricks out of the old advertising, uh, book.

In short, a guy sunbathes in a gray t-shirt (geeky), but can't quite read his "iPad" due to the sunlight. On the deck chair next to him lies a beautiful, bikini clad woman sunbathing while reading her Kindle with a pair of sunglasses on! The geeky guy asks the beautiful woman how she's reading in the sunlight, she confidently responds by saying, "it's a Kindle," and points out that the Kindle cost less than her sunglasses did. The geeky guy is left the inadequate fool. Struggling to read further, he enviously looks over at the beautiful woman while she smirks and carries on reading her Kindle. As a guy, it's pretty hard to watch that and not think, "I want that." (I'm talking about the Kindle, aren't you?)

Recently I had a conversation with a friend who has an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. He's been in the market for an iPad for some time, but at the last minute he decided to go for the Kindle instead. A tad confused by his last minute change in direction, I asked him why. He noted to me that his iPhone does everything he needs it to do (web browsing, email, apps etc), so getting an iPad would only double up on what he's already got. As for reading e-books, he continued, the Kindle is substantially cheaper and arguably easier to read.

I guess it's horses for courses. I know I'd go for the iPad, but I have different needs / wants as to what my friend does.

Amazon's new iteration of the Kindle was released earlier this month. Having seen the ad, and being that you're likely a Mac fan since you're reading this on TUAW, what would you go for? Let's have our own little Kindle vs. iPad face-off poll.

iPad vs Kindle face-off -- I've seen the new Kindle Ad, I'm getting...
A Kindle. I want to read in the sunlight. Plus, I've already got an iPhone / iPod touch. 710 (11.9%)
An iPad. Even if I've already got an iPhone / iPod touch, the iPad is SO much more than just an e-reader. Plus, I'm only ever on holiday in the sun about two weeks a year. Basically, I don't read in the sun all that much. 3698 (62.2%)
Neither, I thought the new Kindle ad was about a woman in a bikini. I don't care for the Kindle or the iPad.570 (9.6%)
Both. They serve different needs and because I can, heck, I'm getting 'em both! Or, I've got them both already.967 (16.3%)

P.S. Check out the parody response to the ad in the continuation of this post. Worth a watch!

Kindle? Come on!!! Does one thing and with a dull grey screen?? GTF outta here. Its great if you live in a world of black and white.
I cant believe Amazon think they are in the same league??
Its like taking a butter knife to a Swiss Army Knife convention...
Damn!!

That way g@y. Apple should have a commercial "Whoa! Can you check the weather on that thing? Yeah. It's an iPad. Throw your kindle in the fire."

There is no need to directly dig the competition. Apple unfortunately did this in the Mac vs PC ads. I think it's kind of low.

I honestly don't understand this entire angle. Reading a book in direct sunlight is something I have never done, and will never do, and don't understand why anyone would ever do or even consider doing.

I find the iPad much easier to read than either a Kindle or a paper book. You never have to worry about lighting the thing. If it's very dark, dim the screen and it works wonderfully.

They should have an even hotter girl reading a regular book next to the hot girl with the kindle. The hotter chick leans in and says..."it's a book, I got it for 50 cents on Amazon and does everything your kindle does."

The advertisement is kinda silly but I suppose it does highlight pretty much the only advantage that the Kindle has over the iPad. The problem for Amazon is that they don't have a competitor for the iPad. What Amazon has is a very good eReader that does very little except display books, which it does very well. If that is all the customer wants then the Kindle is an excellent choice but if you want to do anything else then clearly the iPad has got the market pretty well sewn up at the moment. This is why I wonder why Amazon is trying to compete against the iPad or tablet computers in general because I am sure they know that people buying them are doing so in order to more than read eBooks.

Is this the typical Kindle user? Doesn't blink at paying more than $140 for sunglasses but harps about how much her reading device costs? Kindle users buy their device for one thing, reading. iPad owners use theirs for so much more. Hell, I would still rather use a paper book but still love my iPad.

It's an apple and oranges issue. However, it does help advertise the Kindle's new price (brought about by sales decline due to the iPad.)

I say iPad, but honestly I'm happy with my iPhone and the Kindle app. I read at least an hour a day on it, and I'm happy as a clam. Although a bigger screen would be better, I don't see the point of spending money on a one-trick pony.

I had a Kindle (2nd Gen) and it was nice, I got a really good deal on it from craigslist. Then I bought an iPad. Kindle was great during the day, but I read a lot at night so using the kindle cover (Which on the 2nd gen was really crappy.) and a reading light I could use it but it wasn't very great. iPad reads at night way better, I only wish it was a little bit lighter. So I decided that the Kindle was costing me too much for too little benefit so I sold it, just a few months before the $189 price drop.

But even after getting iPad I still get my books Amazon's kindle store as they have a much better selection. I like the iBooks app better but Amazon's isn't bad. Now that they have the Wifi only Kindle for $139 I am going to buy one in addition to iPad.

My main reasons for buying a Kindle again are these:
-It is cheap
-Easier to carry along with my MBP (less weight)
-The new smaller design looks a lot better
-I can sync from my iPad to my Kindle and back again. (And even my iPhone.)

iPad and Kindle both have very different purposes, if you just want to read Kindle wins hands down. If you want anything more than that iPad is the clear winner.

I have an iPad and it serves me well for reading (mostly via the Kindle app). Sometimes I'm waiting in line and don't have my iPad, but I have my iPhone.

When I'm outside I'm normally doing something that precludes reading. The few times I have wanted to read outside have been in the shade anyway.

I haven't tried a kindle with a book light, but I have used paper books with a book light, and the experience is subpar. Bright enough to cobra the whole page without constant adjustment and it keeps my wife awake. Small enough to not keep her awake and I have to fiddle with it to read the whole page, and that movement wakes her. The whole page LED lights are ok but scratch to easily...and make a book more unwieldy then an eBook! I imagine a kindle plus book light would be just as bad (except I could adjust the font size to somewhat make up for poor light). This is very important to me, important enough that I strted reading with kindle in the iPhone prior to the iPad existing!

So I have no real reason to buy a kindle. If I did a lot of outdoor in the sun reading I would likely buy a kindle, but unless I stopped doing indoor stuff I would not regret having the iPad. It is my goto device for web browsing (even if a laptop is handy), and a lot of reference materials are on web pages not books I can simply load into a kindle.

I don't think the kindle is a bad device (it does nicely for the display technology and price point...a duel mode display could work wonders for it but that would add signifigantly to the price and without careful software work cut battery life significantly), and I don't think that people who buy it are dumb.

I think the kindle addresses problems I don't have, fails to address problems I do have, and is a great device for people who do have the problems it does address and don't have problems it fails to address.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer an actual book to either the kindle or ipad. You can read it on the airplane when electronics can't be used, it doesn't require charging, and if it gets wet or damaged by the pool or in my luggage, no big loss. For the most part, I can get the books for free by hitting up the local library.
