Apple raking in the mobile profits

While taking a look at the Fortune Magazine online tech blog, I saw some comments by Canaccord Genuity about Apple profits in the mobile market. They are a head-turner.

Apple mobile profits are stunning, and they're even better when compared to the rest of the industry. The really interesting item is that Nokia, Samsung, and LG combined sold about 400 million handsets worldwide for the first six months of the year, and those three firms together garnered 32% of the profits in that sector.

Meanwhile, Apple sold 17 million mobile devices over the same period and snagged 39% of industry profits. Wow! Steve and friends must be doing something right. It's especially notable because Apple wasn't even in the cellphone business until 2007. Sure, Android is coming up fast and may pass Apple in smartphone sales, but in terms of profit, Apple has everyone else on the run.

This all came about in the past 3 years. The sector moves quickly, Apple will need to stay on the ball because things will keep changing. The UI was Apple's big technology breakthrough with the iPhone, pretty much everything else they offered up until retina display has already been done from a hardware perspective. Very impressive figures though.

That graph must be wrong. The Palm Pre killed the iPhone a long time ago didn't it?

No. Palm has been a dead OS for 3 years now.

since this is about profits - not user installed base - Android will never surpass Apple in profits. Apple makes money for the hardware. Google makes a much smaller licensing fee for the OS.

Apple sold approximately one-twelfth the number of phones, for 22% more profit. That suggests that either (or a bit of both):
- Nokia, Samsung and LG are dead in the water, making hardly any profit from their phones.
- Apple is raking in excess profits in a way that most companies can only dream of. Addicted fans like myself are happy to pay way over the odds - for a very superior product.

Yeah, and the best part is that all those profits came out of your pockets!
