Verizon CEO says no to iPhone? Oh.

The rumors have been flying around for longer than I can remember about there being a Verizon iPhone, but here it is, straight from one of the sources: "We would love to carry it when we get there, but we have to earn it." That's Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg speaking honestly on his company's chances at carrying the iPhone anytime soon. From that statement alone, you can probably conclude that while there may have been talks between Verizon and Apple about carrying the iPhone, it's not going to happen anytime soon, including by January (which is when the latest rumor puts the mythical announcement).

Why not? Seidenberg is talking about "earning it" with his company's 4G LTE network. While most of the rumors have evolved around a CDMA iPhone, Seidenberg says it's more likely that Apple will want to make a 4G phone, and whenever Apple decides to do that, Seidenberg wants to be there with the network to support it. "I think 4G will accelerate the process," he said, "and any other decisions Apple makes would be fine with us. Hopefully, at some point Apple will get with the program."

So if you were planning to jump on a brand new VeriPhone sooner rather than later, consider those hopes dashed -- for now. This means we get to stop dealing with the obviously fake "screaanshots," right?

hmm, well he says that "Apple needs to get with the program..." He needs to realize that Apple IS the program, not Verizon.

He sounds arrogant. I still don't understand what he meant by Apple getting with the program or some bs.

In case if you've already forgotten, Apple approached you before AT&T 3 years ago to put iPhone on your network and you said no. Apple may lose user base to Android, but you may lose out on attracting new customers. Now you better start thinking straight if t-mobile sprint or even Nextel begin using iPhones.

Uh... did it ever cross anyone's mind that Verizon is hardly going to spoil the surprise, if there is going to be a January announcement? What exactly do you think this means, '"and any other decisions Apple makes would be fine with us."' To me, that is another way of saying, 'we're open to a CDMA phone, if Apple decides to make one...'

Perhaps, this is just a way to get people to discount the rumor, so that the announcement really is a surprise.

@IGO are you serious? Did you already forget that Apple originally wanted Verizons Inferior CDMA network? You people don't think Apple wasn't aware of the fact of talking and surfing the Internet wasn't possible on Verizon? You act like it's something new...

You're right, but in all fairness that was over 3 years ago. At this point I would assume Apple would wait just a little bit longer to be able to launch the non-AT&T iPhone on the new LTE network. It's a smart business move that has a touch of style.

Steve Jobs likes style. In his gadgets and marketing at least.

That turtleneck has got to go.

A 'screaanshot' was misspelled in the question to Aunt Tuaw that is linked. Very funny to bring it to this post as well ;)

Okay...TAP TAP TAP. Hello is this on? SPRINT, TMOBILE can both use CDMA.

Don't be surprised if either of those or both of them get the iPhone 4. Verizon pissed off Jobs long ago and Steve does not forget these things quickly. I know and I know personally. It takes a long time to get back in his good graces and I don't think Verizon is anywhere near that yet. Apple does not need Verizon for the iPhone to be a success. It's already there.

So stop dreaming of Verizon and start thinking about Sprint and or Tmobile. Tmobile in my view would be a bad thing based on their crappy service and their CEO sucks eggs, but...maybe things have changed.

T-Mobile - 34 million customers
Sprint - 48 million customers
Verizon - 92 million customers

If you were looking to make as much money as possible, would you go for the smaller networks with mediocre reputations (in general), or would you go for the 92 million customers who are currently on the network that is well known for it's excellent coverage?

That's all assuming that Apple only expands to a single new network... there's no reason for that, Verizon can expand to them all. It's just that Verizon is the biggest and most newsworthy and thus is the network that is mentioned.

LTE makes sense. Apple doesn't have to build 2 phones, and VZN gets to run the iPhone on a network that was designed for lots of data. 3G was more of a prototype - it works only when there isn't a lot of traffic. LTE, being the second generation wireless data network should have much better performance.

Is VZN already building a LTE network? These things don't just appear overnight....

Verizon iPhone rumormongers are like moon landing hoaxers, 2012 true believers, Obama birthers, and 9/11 truthers: nothing as flimsy as evidence and logic can convince them that the truth is anything other than what they believe.

It really is this simple: Verizon won't have an iPhone until they've got LTE in significant markets.

I agree on LTE. That's mid-2011 though, not really all that far away.

Mid-2011 is the current estimate; originally they were saying late 2010. They'll probably slip a little further but I would be surprised if it wasnt in several major markets by the end of 2011.

Are we surprised? Nope. Those 3 million CDMA iPhone 4s due for production in December are probably for China Telecom subscribers.

I'm not sure why, but I get exactly the opposite message. When the CEO of Verizon suddenly does an about face after years of downplaying the iPhone's awesomeness and admits how much he'd love to have it, it's probably because he already knows he has it. January sounds right.
