7-inch iPad coming? Loose lips in Shenzen say yes

Since the iPad was first announced in January of this year, there's been speculation that a smaller form factor -- say, something between an iPad and an iPod touch -- would be added to the line.

Shanzai.com, a site that follows China's technology industry, has posted a rumor to the effect that Apple's next tablet will resemble "an oversized iPhone 4" rather than a smaller iPad. Shanzai says that they have "ears to the ground in Shenzen," the home of Apple contract manufacturer Foxconn, and that loose lips have stated that the 7" tablet is a "finished product."

Sam Levin of AppMinute.com and I discussed the possibility of a smaller tablet on a podcast we recorded right after our abortive attempt at doing TUAW TV Live this week. Apple abhors a lot of different products that are not heavily differentiated. I brought up the example of Archos, which has a line of six Android-based tablets that range in screen size from 2.8" to 10.1." That just seems to be a bit odd, as there's not a tremendous amount that really makes the devices different other than screen size. Apple, however, has managed to turn the iPod line into four completely different products -- the minimalist shuffle, the tiny touch screen nano, the Classic, and the iPod touch.

Would Apple risk cannibalizing sales of the iPod touch on the small device side and the existing iPad on the larger tablet side to bring in a new form factor? Does a smaller iPad that would be difficult to type on make sense? What do you think? Leave your comments below.

Did anyone notice that a 7 inch iPad with the iPhone4 pixel density (326ppi) would work out to a resolution of 1920 x 1080!! That combined with a camera or two, and I'm in, even if it's the same price as the current iPad!

I don't get it. What will surfing the internet be like on a 7-inch iPad? Will I need to visit "mobile" sites like the ones I visit on my iPhone? I much prefer beautiful, full-fledged websites. Will I enjoy movies as much? I want a nice size to enjoy my movies on a potential retina display. Will I be able to see two pages on my ebooks at the same time if I put it on landscape mode, and see it as well as on the current iPad, or will the text size be too small that way?

Do people want a second smartphone to carry around, or a tablet computer? I really don't get it. What sets the iPad apart from the iPhone is the beautiful screen real estate. What sets it apart from clunkier computers is it's easy-of-use, and that it's relatively more portable.

Apple doesn't need to do much more to kill dedicated reading devices than it's already doing. Apple should be worrying about setting itself apart from other companies working on building tablet computers, too. That's the real threat. And what sets the iPad apart from those others right now is that the iPad is actually more like a computer than just a paperback-sized smartphone.

I would much prefer a 7" form factor to the current iPad albeit at a proportional price between the iPad and a iPod Touch..

As a new iPad owner, I can definitely see the arguments on both sides of the aisle. I had a Pandigital Novel that ran Android, so it was basically a 7-inch tablet. 7 inch is a great size for a mobile device. It’s easier to hold, carry, and the screen would still have enough real estate to let you be productive. Typing in portrait is like typing on an oversized smartphone and definitely not like portrait on the current iPad. 7-inch is the smallest a device like this can be and maintain a good balance between productivity and portability. If you added in at least a front-facing camera (and a rear facing camera and GPS would be killer!), the 7-inch model would most definitely cannibalize sales of the current iPad as well as the iPod touch. If the rumors are true, Apple will phase out the 1st gen iPad.

I love the screen on the iPad, which is my first iDevice. The 9.7 inch screen is wonderful. I can type pretty well with the screen in landscape and still see what the heck I’m doing. Yes, it is a little unwieldy to hold at times, but I guess I’m just enamored about how functional this device is. It doesn’t completely replace the need for a computer, but it does the 75% of stuff that I use most often very well.

the current iPad size is PERFECT!!
a little heavy but that's not a reason to make it smaller!
A 7 inch screen would be too small to watch videos or read books on...

What we do need is a slightly bigger iPhone.
Say an inch bigger.

A 7" ipad would be fantastic as an ebook reader! The existing ipad is too big to just pull out on the bus to read during the journey.

Bring it on - soon pleaes!
