Are you using Apple's Ping?

Ping is Apple's first earnest foray into the social network game. Introduced with iTunes 10, Ping lets users see the music their friends are buying from the iTunes Store, leave comments, and point out what they like.

There are also several musicians participating. The more active among them post photos and videos, stories, and so on. It's a young network with lots of potential, but for now, some folks are less than impressed. A recent update to iTunes put Ping in your music library (it used to be limited to the iTunes Store) and added a big 'ol sidebar.

Our question to you is: are you using it? I'll admit that my interest has waned, and that's because nearly all of the updates I see are of the "[Person X] is now following [Person Y]" variety, which isn't very interesting. Perhaps if the artists I followed were a bit more active, I might use it more.

Am I the only one? Complete our short poll below and let us know if you're using Ping. We'll post the results at a later time.

I tried it out for a week and didn't really understand the point so I deleted my profile. If there were a way to remove Ping from the sources pane I'd use it. If other people find it useful, wonderful, but I think we should have the option of whether to have it enabled in the app or not.

I could care less about Ping and am starting to hate "iConduit" ... you know the everything 's gotta go through this app abomination that iTunes has become. No iStore, iPing, etc for me.

I was curious to check it out when it launched, but was gobsmacked at the requirement that it uses the name on my credit card as my profile name.

Add to that, any reference to my old anonymous nickname and all reviews i may have written in the App Store will be changed from my anonymous nickname to name on the my credit card that my iTunes account gets billed to!!! WTH?!

At least they were upfront about it guess, it was very clear during the registration stage that this was going to happen.

I tried changing my name to something more anonymous for the sake of taking Ping for a bit of a spin but noticed that it changed those same fields on my credit card billing details also. I promptly cancelled my Ping account in about 5 mins.

"There are also several musicians participating."?

For certain definitions of "several" maybe ... There's a couple handful of musicians. If you're tastes fall in the "Billboard 100", you're in luck. And there's no way to "dislike" or "not interested" in an artist, so every time you ask for recommendations, Ping is absolutely positive you'll love Lady Gaga, regardless of your musical preferences, interests, or buying habits ...

I would like to try it, but I am afraid that activating it would leave a socially intruding software app that I can't deactivate. It's the same reason that I didn't activate Genius. Just as well, because that's gone now...

And why did they redesign the icon and the GUI???? The GUI is now so HARD to view! Why??? AAAAArrrrrg!

It has a way to go, but I have discovered some new music with it so I check it occasionally. Of course, until you can by lossless encoded tracks from iTunes, I buy the music that I've discovered on CD.

I think that PING is only a little part of what Apple could do with such a great list of owners. Does not mean nothing to know what Ping user are buying into the Itunes store, this is not a service for me, really it feels like a commercial instrument for Apple.
When I heard about PING I thought that it will be a place to share music and our music, I mean amateurs and musicians that work hard for an audience. Is very hard for new musicians to get their talent rated for a big audience.
Sorry that's my two cents

No interest in Ping. Don't like the name either. Maybe I'm getting old…maybe I've just seen it all before.
