Sonos delivers free iPad remote for its wireless music systems

It must be 'iPad Remote Week' because hot on the heels of Apple releasing iTunes remote control for the iPad, Sonos has delivered a very nice, free iPad remote that is feature complete, and elegant in execution.

Previously, Sonos owners had to make do with the iPhone version of the app, which only ran in portrait mode and had to upscale to fill the iPad screen. That's all fixed now, with the delivery of the Sonos Controller for iPad. I gave it a run through last night, and it is a pleasure to use. The larger iPad screen means most functions are right on the front page, so there's no hunting around for hidden functions. You get album art, zone control, and music source selection at the tap of a finger.

Installing the app requires a software update to all your home controllers and Zone Players to version 3.3. That can be accomplished right from the new iPad remote, and the software will notify you if you need to update.

The 3.3 update adds support for AAC streaming radio stations, and for European countries, it adds the popular Spotify service. The iPhone version of the Sonos app has not been updated since May, and Sonos says an update to that app is pending approval from Apple.

The Sonos system is not inexpensive, but it is a bargain compared to wired whole-house systems. For your investment, you get a very easy to set up entertainment center that you can add to as your desires dictate. The audio is very high quality, and the company commitment to the Mac platform is very strong.

The Sonos wireless music system is one our favourite gadgets at the moment but the one thing that puts many people off is the price. Well Sonos have designed a free app that works on either the Apple iphone or iPod touch, this eliminates the need for the Sonos controller which is quite expensive to buy. Once you have located and installed the app you will have to set the app up to work with your system. Thankfully the process is amazingly simple, once you open the app for the first time you will be given two options. You can add it to your set up system or use the app to set up your system for the first time. Both options work equally well but I would suggest you set up the system using your pc and then add the app as this was quicker.

We have been testing this out for about a month as well. I love it. It's definitely one of those "must have's" if you want to invest in the entire system. The app was extremely well designed and thought out.

I even used it with iOS 4.2 (beta) and it supports Multitasking so they are thinking ahead over at Sonos.

One thing I would like to see in the future is support for multiple Pandora accounts.

Here's our review of the app and sonos:

I started investing in Sonos at my home about 6 months ago. I started with one zp120 and a week later added two S5s. Yesterday, added a zp90. Yes, it is a bit pricey but can be done without the overhead expense of custom installer solutions and works as advertised. The iPad app is a welcomed addition to their already free iPhone/itouch app.

I was part of the beta, so I've had it for awhile. It's fantastic! Very slick and easy to use. Very well thought out!
