AT&T Navigator for iPhone updated, features direct speech recognition
If you're a subscriber to the free AT&T Navigator app and the associated service , then you'll want to load the latest update ASAP.
AT&T Navigator v1.7i is the newest version of the TeleNav-powered app, and it's now the first iPhone GPS navigation app that incorporates direct speech recognition. As you can see in the video above, all you need to do is tap an icon, speak your destination, and the app will display appropriate destination addresses. Tap one of the addresses, and navigation begins.
The new version also provides alerts for traffic cameras, works in landscape mode, and has a lane-assist function that shows you which lane you need to be in before you get to an intersection. When you need directions back to your home location, there's a new "shake to go home" function -- just shake the iPhone, and the app knows you want directions back home.
The free app works with a US$9.99 monthly service that appears on your AT&T iPhone bill. You can choose a monthly or annual subscription, and you can cancel at any time. Note that navigation is only possible in areas where you have cellular data coverage, as the maps are downloaded on demand.

I have the iPad 3G and this app works great with it. Not sure why it wouldn't be supported, but perhaps it is because it only works on the 3G version(s) of the iPad.

This must obviously be a paid press release, this crap is the most worse rated GPS related app in the app store. Product sponsors and award / ratings companies would have you thinking different but just look at the user rating average and read the personal reviews.
What's worse is this comes preinstalled with tons of other AT&T apps on the Samsung Captivate for AT&T and cannot be uninstalled without jailbreaking (rooting the phone).
Navigon needs to integrate this into their iPhone app as either a free update or a paid upgrade. I'd buy it for $5 or $10.

I didn't expect it to *immediately* charge my phone without a warning or at least being more clear that this was going to occur. I immediately cancelled the subscription - not because of the quality of the application as I'm sure that it is great but simply because I really didn't want to pay for an app for which there are many apps that provide similar functionality for free or at a significantly lower price - but given that this is AT&T I fully expect to have to now deal with the cancellation with a series of web forms, emails, and phone calls to make it go away. Caveat emptor!

Once the unit is on, a properly designed speech recognition device and software doesn't and shouldn't require further tactile input.
"Properly designed" and AT&T don't usually have anything to do with one another.

"AT&T Navigator is not supported on the iPad."
