No Comment: Microsoft looking at introducing its own tablet

CEO Steve Ballmer is targeting this Christmas season to deliver Microsoft's Windows-based tablet OS into consumer hands. Website Electronista suggests that the HP Slate 500 will provide the most likely platform for the new system.

To that we say: Zune.

No wait, ... we say: "No Comment."

Is this referring to a "Windows-based tablet" that is Windows 7 based or Windows Phone OS (Zune flavored)? The latter has potential IMO, the previous would be a niche player at best unless it was heavily trimmed and skinned. But why go to that effort if Windows Phone OS has already covered that base?

PS. Reading many these comments makes me pretty proud of the Mac community. There are a lot of informed Mac users that are not ready to totally dismiss Zune out of hand just because of its Microsoft pedigree. A failure of marketing doesn't mean it was a bad product. Count me among the people who think the hardware is beautiful, the UI very elegant and unique and the PC music browsing hookup gorgeous and innovative.

I sure hope this is a trend that continues. I think it would be a mistake to become so arrogant and dismissive. A competitive environment, and informed critical behavior from Apple devotees only helps make Apple stronger and produce better products IMO.

Why even bother? There's probably not a lot of consumers out there waiting for a Windows 7 tablet. They should just stick to using their netbooks if that's the case.

Its articles like this that make me hate "Apple people". WTF is wrong with people, learn to use the best that everybody releases and encourage competition. Face it, the iPad is a POS compared to what it could and should have been. And the Zune is a SICK device, I just had an iPhone before the HD one came out and dont wanna bother switching (plus I love my iPhone and unless the winmo7 phones make me a latte every morning I doubt ill switch).

I have seen plenty of BSOD's as well. I am a big Macfanboy since I have been using them since OS 1.0 was released so many years ago. But I am also a PC tech with a string of certifications. Though I will admit that there are features in Windows 7 that I really like I am still not a fan of Windows overall and the BSOD is still a reality. This is not to say that the Mac does not have its own problems too but the BSOD is not a thing of the past. I see it at least 3-5 times a month and the other people that I work with see it as well from time to time. We run Windows XP where I am but I know that I have seen it on Windows 7 as well at home a few times.

Will it be less expensive? What Apps can I run on it? Too soon to tell, but it makes a great alternative to BOB.

DIMWITS, WAKE UP. It will be a pile of cheap black plastic with all the innovation that faceless suits can devise (or copy).

Wow, fanboy/girl alert!

If you're gonna bash a Microsoft product, atleast wait unti something tangible is out there, or atleast wait for a spec sheet. Don't bash it just because it's Microsoft. Remember, you're trying to act as if you're running a professional site.

The Zune HD is actually a decent Media Player with a hell of a UI. The fact that it isn't a popular as the iPod is mostly just because it's late to the game and Microsoft is pretty bad at marketing.

It's been known for quite some time now that there's a tablet version of WP7 floating around. One that will be mostly maintained by 3rd parties and released 'as is' by Microsoft. As usual TUAW is late to the game with an unprofessional article. Damn, grow up. Oh, and you forgot to write M$ Erica, that would have really made your article.

I have to agree with the Count. Perhaps Microsoft has learned a thing or two and does actually release a good tablet.

However, that said, I still think it will basically flop in sales. As will most of the others no matter how good they are. Due to timing. the ipad has had too long to get in folks hands and minds. With places like Mercedes Benz putting ipads in all dealerships, major schools like Stanford Med giving ipads to students etc Apple has a huge lead.

Lol, so true. Erica is one of the hungriest trolls on the internet. I know this is a mac blog, but many readers like microsoft products. Stop alienating them!

Microsoft's simply skating to where the puck was - a little zuner than most. But the game's already moved on and they've no idea where it's going.

@Jose, you think his joke is stale? Maybe you haven't been paying attention. The HP tablet running Win7 has a ctrl-alt-del button built in as one of the features. Saw the video review of it where that was touted as a feature before the video was taken down.

Reality is sometimes more funny than fiction.

Why would HP use a windows-based OS? It owns webOS, for Pete's sake.
