iPhone 4 shipping times improved
Good news for those wanting to purchase an iPhone 4...in the US anyway. Shipping estimates have improved from three weeks to between five and seven business days, according to Apple's US online retail store. Improved shipping estimates usually indicate that Apple is catching up with consumer demand. The iPhone 4 has been in high demand since its release in June, selling well over 1.5 million devices in its first three days of availability. But supply is still short, especially with expansion into the overseas market. According to AppleInsider, mobile carrier China Unicom was only able to meet about half of the pre-orders placed by customers, with the rest having to wait until the end of October for their orders to be fulfilled.
Similarly, the iPad suffered high shipping times upon its release in April, with things only improving in August when Apple's standard shipping time of 24hrs was reached.
In the UK, the iPhone 4 shipping time is set at three weeks, while the iPhone 3GS can be shipped in one to two weeks, according to Apple's UK online retail store.
Personally, I've currently got an iPhone 3G with the mobile carrier O2. The contract has expired, and I'm now running on their Simplicity tariff. I could upgrade to the iPhone 4 with O2 (they seem to get priority stock), however, Tesco is offering the most cost effective contract (for me anyway). Unfortunately, though, they never seem to have any stock.
Tesco is offering a 16GB iPhone 4 on a 12 month contract at £35 a month. The upfront cost is £229, but the overall cost of ownership is £649. With this contract, you get 750 monthly minutes, a 1GB monthly data allowance, and unlimited texts. Alternatively, O2's £35 a month contract is for 18 months. The upfront cost is cheaper, at £179, but the overall cost of ownership comes in at a much steeper £809. Worse still, with this contract you only get 300 monthly minutes and a 500MB monthly data allowance. If I was to purchase a contract nearer the 600 minute a month point with O2 (which is more like what I need), I'd have to pay £40 a month on an 18 month contract with the overall cost of ownership being £839.
For me, it's obvious to go with Tesco's iPhone 4 contract. Unfortunately, until stock supplies improve, I'm forced to hold onto my iPhone 3G.
Engadget has done a fantastic comparison of all the price plans for the iPhone 4 in the UK. If you haven't got an iPhone 4 yet, and you live in the UK, it's well worth the read.

I'm on my year and a bit old (day one) 3GS and am very happy with Tesco so far, having changed to them at the 13 month mark when my 12month free data finished plus 1 month Sinplicity to get the free unlock. Tesco is clearly cheaper and as it's the same network I was on before (O2) and I can't discern any difference in data performance.  My only gripe is the font rendering on the black version of the top bar!! http://plixi.com/p/45044772
October 06 2010 at 2:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyiPhones have been immediately available at many Apple retail stores for some time now. (In US at least.) I walked into my local store a couple weeks ago, and walked out with one a few minutes later. No lines, no waiting. That was back when online said 3 weeks delivery.
October 06 2010 at 1:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis was similar to my experience. Having a PO Box, Apple wouldn't ship an iPhone 4 to me (had an account for almost 8 years). Couldn't order over the phone and pick up in store. Assumed it would take two trips like it did with iPhone 3G. Walked into closest AT&T store last week, they had both 16 and 32GB phones in stock. Walked out with a working phone and contacts. Backed up (old phone) and synced (new phone) when I got home.

October 06 2010 at 12:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell said! I have been out of contract for more than 6 months, patiently waiting for white iPhone. If it doesn't come soon, I might just jump ship. I might as well get what I want elsewhere.
October 06 2010 at 2:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWow, I must have been jammy, my O2 3G contract was up last Friday so I tried the nearest Tesco Extra and they had several iPhone 4s in stock! (both 16GB and 32GB)
So I bought one.
I've gone for the 12 month x £20 contract as I'm a low user, works out about £50 cheaper than O2 over an 18 month period (though it was the contract length rather than the saving that swung it for me).
You don't get visual voicemail and I hear you can't do call forwarding, conferencing etc but I can live without those...
Interesting what Chris says about Tesco's APNs...hmm. If I experience data issues I can compare it with the old 3G which remains on O2 as the wife has inherited it. That should indicate whether the issue is with the local infrastructure or the MNO!
As a previous Tesco Mobile pay-as-you-go customer I'd been waiting for my two local branches to get stock of iPhone 4s. I gave up.
The mobile network 3 has a deal at the moment - £99 for the iPhone 4, and then £30/month for 24 months, which I went for. It's more expensive than Tesco but my local 3Store had phones in stock. I've only been in one place with no signal at all (a small market town at the bottom of a valley) and most of the time I have a 3G signal.
I guess I got lucky with the timing. My option for renewal just came up so I was finally able to order one with the discount right when the times changed from 3 weeks down to 5-7 days. Though right now I'm really wishing it was sooner since my current phone isn't even able to hold a charge for a full day anymore and its getting really annoying to make sure I'm charging it at every opportunity I have.

October 06 2010 at 11:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've had my iPhone 4 since mid August from Tesco - got it by phoning twice a day to the number on the website, and one day they had stock, wife and I both got one same day. Best to phone morning and then after lunch (I was advised) Had 3G iPhone prior with O2, noticed no diff with Tesco, of course Tesco is powered by O2 anyway.
I bought 32GB on a 12 month £20 contract and I'm delighted with it. Good Luck getting one Matt!
No word on when we can expect to see the white iphone? I'm actually holding off on a purchase for myself (black) and the Mrs (white). due to this.
