Tweet Library for iPad makes Twitter useful

I've long been fascinated by the idea of using Twitter as both a social platform and a means of archiving my life on the web. I've played with using favorites, searches, backup services, my own bots for archiving links and direct messages ... I know it goes against the grain of the original vision of Twitter, but it's grown to be something that really has the potential to be more than a flighty (excuse the pun) social network. I haven't, however, really found a solid way to make Twitter work for me the way I think it could. That seems to have changed today, with my discovery of Tweet Library for iPad.

Tweet Library is a Twitter client, but its main feature set revolves around archiving and organizing your tweets. You can see your last few thousand tweets (3,000 tweets on import, which I believe is the limit of the API - Ed), and you can search and filter your timeline, lists, favorites and mentions, as well as search all of Twitter. When you run across words of wisdom, links of interest, general hilarity, or any tidbit you'd like to save, you can send them into custom Collections. Create as many collections as you need, and let them serve as a means of organizing the flurry of information you come across on a daily basis. You can archive and export your collections and timelines, too. I won't list every feature here (there are a lot of them), but I'll note that support for TextExpander and Instapaper is among a host of other niceties.

Manton Reece (Riverfold Software), the developer of Tweet Library, is no stranger to TUAW, nor to polished and useful applications. There's obviously a good bit of his heart and soul in this latest endeavor. I've come across a couple of minor bugs in this initial version, but he's been very responsive and is already working on the next update with more features and fixes. The app is priced at US $9.99 ... a bit pricey for the timid, casual Twitter surfer, but a solid investment for anyone who spends more time there than they'd readily admit. If you fly with that flock, have a peek at Tweet Library on the App Store, and check out the website for screenshots and a short video.

I find twitter useful as a content aggregator. I think that's the interesting thing about twitter, it's not really anything, it's how you use it itself or what it generates that gives it definition

Is there any way to view a friend's posts? I tried tapping on their name but I couldn't see the option. You can search for post from them but if it's a private account you're out of luck. And there needs to be a setting where you can set how many posts load up when you start the app. There seems to be basic features missing. Add some basic stuff and the app would be worth it for the archiving feature.

"a means of archiving my life on the web". Coincidently I went to look up a departed friend of mine's account today to look back at his tweets and the account no longer exists. He died at the end of May, I believe the deactivated the account after about 3 months.

Though Tweets are archived in the Library of Congress now, it is a real shame that accounts get cleared out for lack of activity without any way to flag the account as something to keep. Obviously this is used to cut down on spammer accounts, account name "sitting", etc., but if someone has a certain threshold of followers, tweets, you think they would preserve the account.

Painful to see someone's conversational web legacy wiped after they die.

Yup $10 is too much, even with the functionality. Of the developer truly wants success they should half the price. After all I'd rather sell two for $10 and get word of mouth advertising rather than one for $10 and maybe...

This looks like a really useful tool for the reasons you give, but I'm having a hard time justifying the $9.99 price tag. Has anyone found out if it also saves your retweets? If so, that adds even more value. Still, I'll wait to see if the price is reduced by at least half before i give it a go.

$10 is not pricey. You can barely get out of Starbucks without paying ten bucks.

10$ on this app looks like it'll take you much further than some Starbucks.

I am so tired of this Starbucks analogy.

Yes, if there are dozens of Twitterclients for 1$ or for free .. then 10$ is pricey. Doesn't mean it can be well worth the money if that is the one feature you are interested in.
